Identify how to use steam and leaf plots using
various examples

Formative & Summative ASSESSMENTS

Formative Assessment through conversations and

observation of students while they complete their
Jump Math
Identify how to create and read a broken line graph

LEARNING RESOURCES CONSULTED
Resource #1: Jump Math Manual
MATERIALS/ EQUIPMENT/ SET UP
Materials: SMAR Board, white board, Jump Math manual
Set-up:
PROCEDURE
Introduction (5min.)
Attention Grabber:
- Todays information will be some of the most valuable info. You can have in preparation for both math and science
in Jr. High School Reading and understanding graphs
Assessment of Prior Knowledge:
- Review the three principles that make-up the scale of a graph (what we start with, what we end with, increments
we use)
Expectations for Learning and Behaviour:
- When we are completing the group discussion. The expectation will be that we are not working in our Jump Math
Manual. IT IS NOT A RACE!!!!!!
Advance Organizer/Agenda:
- Steam and Leaf Plots (p 126)
- Broken Line Graphs Intro (p. 127)
- Reading Graphs (p. 128)
Transition to Body: Leading question:
- How many of you have ever seen or heard of a Steam and Leaf Plot before? Ask students to explain their
understanding of these plots
Body (40min.):
What is the teacher doing?
What are the students doing?
Learning Activity #1:
- Listening and participating in whole class
Steam and Leaf Plot (15 min)
discussion
Complete the following examples on the board to demonstrate to students:
- completing the steam and leaf plots that I
(Danny: I write this down instead of typing because it is too difficult to type put on the white board.
equations and numbers I will show you the written product tomorrow)

Formative Assessments
Assessment through conversations and observation of students while they
complete their Jump Math
Specific Learner Considerations:
- There is a wide range of learner ability in this class Some students will
need to go with Mr. George for additional help
Transition to Activity #2:
- Please take the next 15 minutes to complete page 126 in Jump Math
Learning Activity #2:
Broken Line Graphs
Broken Line Graphs are very similar to the bar graphs we looked at
yesterday Scale has the same principles
- Only difference is that these data plots are connected to each other
to show their relation to each other
Example: Draw this graph on the white board and ask the following
questions:
- What was the coldest day?
- What was the warmest day?
- Which days are the same temperatures?
- Does this graph show us a trend in temperature?

Formative & Summative Assessments

- Formative assessment through observation of student work and whole
class conversations with students
Specific Learner Considerations
Transition to Activity #3:
- Attention Getter count down
Learning Activity #3:
Reading Graphs
This content will be covered in previous activity we will be practicing
reading graphs while doing white board activity
Formative & Summative Assessments
Specific Learner Considerations
- If students finish early they can play the sponge games or complete
Christmas Booklet until we wait.
Transition to Closure
- Attention Getter count down
Closure (5min.):
Consolidation/Assessment of Learning:
- Who can tell me the difference between a steam and a leaf?
- Who can tell me the three factors that make-up the scale of a graph?
