Science:

Goals for this lesson: SLE5 Describe changes in the size and location of Sun shadows during
the dayearly morning, to midday, to late afternoon.
Guiding Question:
How does the sun create "moving" shadows. Why does the time of day change the shadows
position?
Introduction: Ask the students what our main source of light is why we have day and night
cycles. Use this to establish what the students know about the sun. Review how Opaque objects
produce shadows when light shines upon them. Also review how the sun rises and sets
throughout the day on the board and emphasizing sunrise, noon, and sunset. Use this opportunity
to review how much the students have retained from previous lessons.
Activity 1: Sit the students in the play area and get a volunteer to help with a demonstration.
Move a flashlight around a globe or another object in a way similar to the sun. The shadows
should "move" as the light source goes around the object. Focus largely on the shadows positions
as sunrise, noon, and sunset. Have the students draw the different position that the shadows are in
depending on what time of day it is. Try to have all of the students sitting and facing the same
way to ensure the best results.
Activity 2: Discuss the questions on the sheet and talk about how sun dials were used in the past.
Think about how and why people would need to know what time it is in the past. As a class
discuss why sun dials are important and how they were used before people invented clocks. Use
this to discuss the relevance of sun shadows as a means to tell time and why it was used in the
first place. Let the students come up with some of the practical ways that people used sun dials
and the events that they may have scheduled around them.
Conclusion: Review what was covered in class- how the suns movements in the sky create sun
shadows and how people used to measure the time of day using sun dials and sun shadows. Use
this time to see if the students have any questions regarding sun shadows or sun dials before
moving on to the next class.
Assessment: Formative assessment will be used in this lesson to gauge the students level of
understanding. The students should be able to come up with several uses for sun dials and realize
how important it is to know what time it is during the day for cultural, religious, and societally
purposes. They can be used for formative assessment by asking the students how they can use the
sun dials in their lives.

Social:
Students will continue to work on the project for the rest of the week, any questions about the
expectations please refer to the lesson plan above.
