Module 2 Chapter 3 Part 5 (Chapter Review) Reflection
Why might competition stand in the way of fruitful discussion?
I feel like once the nature of a discussion becomes competitive, then it loses its value as a discussion and becomes more of a speak-to-win situation rather than a speak-to-learn one. Also, people tend to behave differently in competitions and are less relaxed and focused on the topic at hand. Rules change because now it is a competitive environment not a learning one. I like elements of competition in my lessons, it helps raise the bar and students seem to enjoy competing. But I would only input a competitive element into a classroom if it seems conducive to their learning. With discussions, the point is to have a fruitful discussion, not to win an argument.
