Excursion Management Plan Request Form

Destination: Kalgoorlie Boulder Museum

Purpose Of The Excursion
How does this excursion relate to the curriculum?
What are the anticipated outcomes for students?
This term our as part of an integrated inquiry and History program, the Year One
students have been learning about life in the past (including differences in family life,
family roles, technology and toys). The students have had the opportunity to explore
the how life from the past differs to their life. Students will be asked to reflect on their
experiences at the museum and write a detailed recount about their experiences at
the museum.
Students will also use what they learnt from the museum to write a detailed
description where they describe the differences between their life and the life of
children in the past.

1. Assessing The Risks

The Western Australian Museum Kalgoorlie-Boulder site is located at the top end of
Hannan Street.
We have undertaken visits to the areas prior to booking this excursion. It is an open
space, but there are pathways that we will insist the children keep to. We will be
walking around with a guide and we will have ratio of one adult to every five or six
children. We will take hand wash gel with us and make sure that the children use some
before eating. First aid kit will be taken.
The Museum is composed of a range of buildings, including historical buildings such as
the Miners Cottage, Woodline Office and the British Arms Hotel. Located within the
Museum grounds are the Ethno Botanic Garden, Sandalwood lamp and DeBernales
offices. The majority of galleries have wheelchair access; however some spaces in
historical buildings, such as the British Arms Hotel have limited wheelchair access.
Toilets, disabled toilet and baby change table are located near the museums main
entrance. There is a chilled water fountain on the verandah outside.

Risks that have been identified and strategies in place to minimise risk

Crossing the road


Staff will wear high visibility vests and place themselves at the front, middle and end
of student line. One staff member will stand in the middle of the road whilst students
are crossing.
The Teacher in charge will determine the safest time to cross.
The 123 MAGIC behaviour management systems will be applied to any student not
following the strict instructions of the teachers while crossing the road.
Students walking off and/or misbehaving, or obtaining general injuries
from falling over.
Students will be wearing full school uniform including a red broad brimmed hat.
Regular head counts will be taken.
Students will be briefed about boundaries and expectations about behaviour. They will
be informed of the consequences if they do not make good choices and do not follow
the teacher and/or parent leader instructions. The 123 MAGIC behaviour management
systems will be applied to any student not following the strict instructions of their
group leader. If students are misbehaving they will be put into the group with their
classroom teacher.
All teachers will have a folder with student information including contact phone
numbers and relevant medical information.
Students using the public toilets
There will be adequate staff available to walk students to the toilets and supervise.
Toilet passes will be used.
1.2 Transport Arrangements
How will the students be transported to, from and during the excursion?
If Applicable, how have you determined that drivers and vehicles are appropriately licensed?

Students will be walking to the venue departing at 9.30am and returning just after
12.30pm. Staff are to wear high visibility vests.
The route that will be taken;
Exit the school via gates on Cassidy Street, turn left.
Cross at Dugan Street and continue on Cassidy Street toward the crossing at
Brookman Street.
Cross Brookman Street. Staff will be on each side of road for safety.
Turn left and proceed towards Maritana Street.
At Maritana Street, turn right and proceed toward Hannan Street controlled
intersection.
Cross Hannan Street at traffic lights from the Pharmacy to the West Australian,
and then from the West Australian to the Exchange Hotel under instruction of
teaching staff.
Turn left and continue to Porter Street.
Cross Porter Street, and make way toward museum.
Arrive at museum.
We will depart the museum and return back to school the same way we arrived at
approximately 12.10.pm

Students from Rooms 3, 4 and 5 are participating in the excursion. See attached list.
There are two students identified as having special needs Noah Barton and Naeshin
Rimene. They have the prerequisite skills for the planned activities.
Noah Barton is hearing impaired. He has a cochlea implant on one ear and a hearing
aid on the other. He has been assigned to Claires Dekuyers group for the rotational
activities at the museum.
Naeshin Rimene wears shields on his leg and finds it difficult to walk long distances.
Naeshin will be driven and picked up by a member of admin or teaching staff or his
parent. He will be in Tania Butchers group and pace will be set throughout the
museum that is confortable for Naeshin to walk at.
Students will be led by museum staff in hands on activities. They have opportunity to
engage and view museum exhibitions. See attached information provided by the
museum.

Claire Dekuyer is the teacher in charge. Tania Butcher, Emma Speedy, (Teachers), Clare
Milford (Education Assistant), and Gemma Howe (ATP student) also be attending in
order to supervise students.
All staff members have appropriate WWC checks. All staff will carry their own mobile
phones in case of emergency.

responsible for the supervision of students. Visitor Services Officers are at the
Museum, and while they will not undertake any role in a supervisory context, will
intervene where behaviour or activities put displays and/or the safety of individuals
and other visitors at risk.

Western Australian Museum Education staff members have a current Working


with Children Check. It is a pre-employment requirement that staff of the
Western Australian Museum provide a National Police Clearance.
Visitor Service Officers hold current senior first-aid certificates. First Aid kits are
available Western Australian Museum (Claire Dekuyer will still carry KPS first
aid kit).
1.5 External Providers

The external provider is The Western Australian Museum Education staff members
have a current Working with Children Check. It is a pre-employment requirement that
staff of the Western Australian Museum provide a National Police Clearance.
Relevant information including Public liability insurance is attached.

2. Supervision Strategies
What is the supervisor to student ratio?
What strategies will be used to supervise students?
For overnight excursions, what strategies will be in place to limit the potential for allegations of
improper conduct against supervisors?

The supervisor to student ratio is 1 adult to every 6 students.
Staff will be paired, assigned 3 parent helpers and given a list of students who they are
responsible for; a specific group of 22-23 students. These adults will monitor their
children at regular intervals.
Staff will wear high visibility vests so they are easily visible to students.
No children to be in front of first adult or behind last adult in the group at any time
when walking to museum.

Western Australian Museum Education staff members are professional


educators with varying levels of experience and qualifications. Staff members
include primary and secondary specialists with teaching experience.
Visitor Service Officers hold current senior first-aid certificates. First Aid kits are
available throughout the Western Australian Museum public spaces.

3. Identification Of Excursion Participants

All students leaving the school grounds need to be in full school uniform including a
red broad brimmed hat and enclosed shoes.
Museum Visitor Service Officers are located in the foyer of the Museum at all
times and wear a uniform and name badge. Museum Education staff can be
contacted via the front desk and wear a name badge with the Museum logo.

4. Information To Parents / Guardians For Their Consent


What information will be provided to parents / guardians for their consent? ( refer to parent / guardian
consent form & information form for parent / guardian)

Parents will receive a letter detailing all excursion information and be


requested to sign a parent consent form and pay $5 to enable their child
to attend/participate.

5. Communication Strategies
How will you communicate with all members of the group during this excursion?
What is the communication strategy in the event of an emergency?
Do you have any other relevant information?
All members of the group will be staying together. We will take mobile phones in case
of emergency.

The Museum is equipped with a public address system which is centrally


controlled from the information desk in the main entrance.

School supervisory teams can have access to a telephone line from the
information desk at the entrance or from the Education Office.

School supervisory teams are encouraged to bring a mobile telephone that they can
be contacted on, and can use to call out during their site visit if necessary. Limiting the
use of mobile telephones is appreciated in the venue, for the consideration of other
visitors and Museum staff.

6. Emergency Response Planning

the supervisors?

Each teacher will be carrying a folder containing relevant information and contact
details for all students.
Claire Dekuyer, the lead teacher will carry a first aid kit.
As outlined in the Museum Management plan;
The Museum is equipped with an Emergency Warning System. An oscillating
whoop-whoop-whoop sound will indicate an evacuation is underway.In the event
of an emergency it is essential that all school visitors take directions from
Museum staff who will be wearing bright yellow or red hats.

Teachers can increase safety by always ensuring that they meet the minimum

supervision requirements and by strongly encouraging students to stay in their


groups with their adult supervisors.

If evacuation is essential all visitors will be assembled at a common point in car


park or another designated safe area. Teachers will need to do a roll call and
must immediately notify Museum staff if any students are missing.

While all our Visitor Service Officer staff have First Aid training, it is the
responsibility of the school to provide basic first aid to the students. Our staff
will assist if possible.

7. Briefing Students And Supervisors


How will all relevant information be communicated to students and supervisors? (e.g. roles,
responsibilities, standards of acceptable behaviour?
Students will be briefed before the excursion about their roles and responsibilities and
behaviour expectations will be outlined (These expectations will be in line will the KPS
Pastoral Care Policy). Staff attending will be briefed by Rebecca Holden regarding their
specific roles in terms of maintaining duty of care and safety when crossing the road.
The Museum Education Officer will also welcome and brief students on arrival, outlining
expected behaviour and the program outline.

All completed excursion documents must be printed, signed and stored in the Excursions File in the
office.
Electronic documents must be stored on the All Staff drive under Excursions.
