OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General
Learning
Outcomes:
Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

GLE 2-9 Recognize the effects of heating and cooling, and identify methods for heating
and cooling.
SLE 3: Describe how heating and cooling materials can often change them, e.g.,
melting and freezing, cooking, burning.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will identify, predict, and record what happens to a liquid when it is cold and to
a potato when it is heated

ASSESSMENTS
Key Questions:
Products/Performan
ces:

Will a liquid change as it is cooled?

What will happen to a potato when it is heated?
Science booklets-prediction, steps, picture and label, conclusion
Popsicles/juice and potatoes

LEARNING RESOURCES CONSULTED

Temperature

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

Potatoes
Popsicle mold
Juice (crystal packet)
Jug
Wooden Spoon
Sour Cream
Spoon (for sour cream)
Plastic/paper plates
Plastic forks
Oven
Tinfoil
Metal fork(s)?
Permanent marker

PROCEDURE
Prior to lesson
Put water in jug
Ensure wooden spoon, juice packet, water, jug, popsicle tray are all
ready to go
Write names on popsicle sticks (students could do this as well
Ensure tin foil and potatoes are ready to go. Have one potato set
aside for passing around. Have permanent marker ready!

Assessment of Prior Knowledge:
1. Review last lesson: measuring hot and cold water,
predicting what will happen. Spend time

discussing last lesson and WHY we need to learn
that information, WHY do we need to know how
to read thermometers? WHY do we need to know
about temperature? = INQUIRY BASED LEARNING
2. I need everyone to turn to the page in our
science booklet called Daily Temperature Record.
It is the page with bozes where we put in
Lethbridges temperature and Iqaluits
temperature
3. DAILY TEMPERATURE from Lethbridge and Iqaluit
*Viewpure to remove ads! Why is it important to
learn about this? Why is it important to know?
MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENT
4. Today we will be learning what happens to things
when they are cooled or heated. We are going to
make predictions like last time, and we are going
to do a few experiments. Spend time discussing
WHY and HOW. =Generate questions, ideas,
conversations. Could talk about todays weather,
etc.
Body
Learning Activity
#1

Tasty Freeze
1. We are going to be learning about what happens to a
liquid when it is cooled We are going to do this by
making some juice and pouring it into molds. Then we
will leave it over night in the freezer and see what
happens to it by tomorrow after it has cooled for 24
hours-one whole day!
2. Does anyone think they know what might happen? Who
has ideas about what could happen to a liquid when it is
cooled? Generate conversation and questions
3. Why do you think we are learning this? Why do you
think it is important to learn this?
4. Prediction if you are wrong it is OK, can be different
than someone elses WRITE DOWN
5. Mix juice
6. Pour juice into molds
7. Draw and LABEL the 3 steps in experiment Be detailed
and take your time. DO NOT RUSH Yours can be
different
USE DESCRIPTIVE WORDS
Step 1: draw juice crystals, water, jug etc
Step 2: draw pouring liquid into mold
Step 3: we will draw this step tomorrow once we find
out what has happened to our liquid juice after it has
been cooled over night

1. Now we are going to be learning about what happens
when something is heated!
2. Can anyone think of a time when we heat something
up? Does the object change or stay the same? Why do
you think it changes?
3. Why do we need to be learning about this? MAKE
LEARNING MEANINGFUL Generate conversation,
questions, ideas!!
4. Pass around 1 potato: have students feel how hard it is,
how heavy it is, look at it and examine what it looks like.
Right now it is a RAW potato. IT HAS NOT BEEN HEATED
YET. What descriptive words could we use to describe
this potato?
*Describe texture, hardness, dryness, taste,
smell, etc
5. What will happen to a potato when it is heated?
6. Write prediction into science booklets
7. Draw and LABEL potato before cooking. USE WORDS
we generated some words about our potato earlier
8. Wrap potato in tin foil and label name. Cook for
approximately 1-1.5 hours at 350(C)
9. Today after afternoon recess we will check on our
potatoes after they have been heated for over an hour
to see if they have changed or not and to discuss what
happens to things when they are heated.
*Could do in partners and share a potato OR pass 1 around
Teacher question/teacher observation/class discussion provides
formative assessment
Product/Artifact: prediction and labelled image(s) in science
booklets
Closure
Time
Consolidation of Learning:
Why is it important to learn about hot and cold temperatures
and to learn about what happens to something if it cooled or
heated??
HAVE CLASS DISCUSSION and REVIEW todays lesson
Praise positive behavior and good communication/cooperation
with other students.

Transition to next lesson:

Tomorrow we will be looking at our juice to see what
happened to it over night while it was in the freezer!
