about the comic

how it all started
this comic stems from my personal love of cooking. I not
only enjoy making food but I am very interested in the history
behind food. My comic is loosely based around a research paper
I wrote called the history of the american diet. The paper dives
into americas food choices over the past century and looks into
things like health and diets from around the world. I wanted to
expand on this paper through my comic but focus mostly on
classic american dishes. by doing this, I could show the history
behind them, giving my comic historical context.

researching the recipes

before I could pick the recipes, I first had to understand
what was happening in each decade. This allowed me to learn how
events such as the roaring twenties and the great depression
had an impact on what americans were making. I also had to learn
when certain products like marshmallows were invented and
when they gained popularity in cooking. After I knew all this I
was able to find out what dishes were iconic to these decades.

making the comic

I made this comic in adobe illustrator. all the images in the
comic were hand drawn, scanned into the computer and turned
into vector images in illustrator. I then created all the boxes,
text and a few extra images and pieced them all together to
make my comic. Once the images were vectors, I was able to
color each piece individually and cut it to fit into the boxes.

a history of america
through food
meals werent always available

in plastic-sealed,
disposable trays like you can find now at your local supermarket.
In fact, supermarkets didnt exist 100 years ago. Prior to the
industrialization and the commercialization of the food process,
American families had to prepare almost all their meals at home
from scratch. Ingredients were limited to what you had in your
pantry, growing in your garden or at a local market!

over the course of the past century,

many advancements in
food production gave way to new, never-before-seen items and
forever changed how we grow, transport and consume food.
During this time, Americans created and cooked their way through
country-shaping events, giving rise to classic dishes we still
cherish today. We not only made up new dishes, but borrowed
meals from other countries and times, branding them with the
All-American stamp of approval.

during each decade,

America faced new challenges and

advancements in food manufacturing. My comic illustrates each
of these decade through its most prominent and memorable dish
along with detailing the history and changes that brought about
its creation. In this comic, you will learn about the past 100 years
through the lense of food and find out just how to make

timeless, American classics!

decade dishes
Apple Pie (1900-1909)

At the turn of the 20th century, Americans had a huge sweet

tooth; this hankering for sweet was partially quenched by
homemade favorites like chocolate brownies, apple pie and baked
Alaska. Apple pie was originally brought to English colonies by
the British, Dutch and Swedes during the 17th and 18th centuries.
As American as apple pie became a coined term in the states in
the 19th and 20th centuries, signifying national prosperity and
pride.

Sweet Potato Casserole (1910-1919)

Even though sweet potato casserole seems like a

quintessential part of any Thanksgiving spread, sweet potatoes
werent actually present at the first Thanksgiving. they are
actually native to Central and South America and were first
introduced to the North via European colonists (Europe is said to
have gained this tuber from Columbus, who brought it back on his
ship). The first recipe for this Thanksgiving classic was published
in 1918, around the same time marshmallows began to gain
popularity.

deviled eggs (1920-1929)

The roaring twenties was a time of dramatic social and

political change that fueled a hip, new mass culture. This young,
party-going lifestyle lead to the creation bar-style dishes like
stuffed mushrooms, deviled eggs and food cocktails. These
finger foods were perfectly crafted for the bar scene and
could easily be created at home for a classy, yet simple party
hors-doeuvre.

spam casserole (1930-1939)

The 1930s brought about historical, country-shaping events

such as The Great Depression. As a result, popular dishes of the
period were inexpensive, one-pot meals. The 1930s also witnessed
the birth of cheap, mass produced products such as Spam and
Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. The 1930s were a time of economic
hardship for many American families; highlighting the importance
of quick, cheap and easy food.

war cake (1940-1949)

During the 1940s, There were about 6 million farms in

america, put in place to support all of the troops fighting in
WWII. dispite increased production, foods like sugar, butter,
meat and cheese were rationed to the public. Because of this,
Americans sought out alternatives and created recipes void of
these rationed products.

green bean Casserole (1950-1959)

The Campbells Soup Company came out with its famous

green bean casserole in the 1950s. It was the perfect recipe for
the holidays: it was made with minimal, on hand ingredients, was
quick and cheap and could be made ahead.

vegetarian chili (1960-1969)

Although the Vietnam War began during the last decade, the
1960s were characterized by the growing population of
granola-crunching, Birkenstock-wearing hippies; hungry for
unprocessed, natural foods. In response, these flower children
began popularizing natural, vegetarian foods such as veggie chili,
guacamole, carrot cake and granola.

Quiche (1970-1979)

The 1970s faced a bit of a relapse in home cooking, mostly

due to the large number of women in the workforce. This
backpedal was also due in part to the high level of latch key
kids (families with both parents working full time jobs). Instead,
emphasis was placed on foods that didnt take much time or
effort to prepare.

cheeseburger pie (1980-1989)

The 1980s were plagued by incredible dance music, neon

outfits, Michael Jackson and unfortunately another devastating
stock market crash. this caused Americans to fall back to their
simple, comfort foods. These low-cost dishes relied on heavily
processed, cheap ingredients.

pizza bagels (1990-1999)

Whereas the preceding decades were ruled by convenience

and frozen foods, the 90s witnessed a huge shift in cooking
along with the popularization of different cuisines. Suddenly
dishes like pizza (Italian) and bagels (Jewish) became all the
hype-leading to mixture of both resulting in the creation of the
pizza bagel.
