Profile

An engineer for the past 40 years, Faisal Ismails

passion for his work has only gotten stronger over
the years.
Born in Johor in the mid 50s, he was

one of the selected few to be sent

off to England to further his studies
by the JPA. He graduated from the
University of Manchester as a
mechanical engineer. After, he
worked with SIRIM for a few years
before being sent off for a training
programme with Honda Car Motor
in Japan.
What followed was a series of
entreprenual exploration within his
field. He started up a few companies
that specialised in manufacturing
metal parts namely Tubular
Metal Form, Metal Formers and Tool
Consult & Press. After decades in the
mechanical industry, he
decided to venture into the
construction industry. Now, apart

from being a vice-president of a big

steel fabrication company (M-10
Builders), he also runs his own
company providing engineering
consultancy and construction services.(Enovent)

Company
Profile

M-I0 Builders is committed to serve

globally through its human resources and facilities for Steel Fabrication and
Erection works. Having over 10
years of
experience, they have upgraded
our CNC processing lines for Beam
and Plate, and currently having
monthly
capacity of 2,000MT. They are
registered as a Class A Contractor with Malaysian Government,
and Grade G7 with the Construction Industry Development Board
(CIDB), They are registered with
Petronas and TNB as well.

Factory Area : 21,000 m2

Factory Building Area : 12,000 m2
Material Storage Area : 20,000 m2
Steel Processing Capacity : 4,000
MT monthly

The factory in Malaysia covers a

factory area of approximately 5600
metre square. it is conviniently
located near Port Klang that gives
them easy access to overseas
shipments.
Their facilities allows them to
handle engineering capabilities of
more than USD 250 million. They
have undertaken a few projects
and were involved in the
construction of the newly opened
Nu Sentral Mall, Kuala Lumpur
International Airport and a few
international projects such as
Dubai Metro and Al-Bidda Tower
in Doha.

The Project

Located in Sipitang Oil & Gas

Industrial Park, Sabah, the world-class
SAMUR project forms an integral part of
PETRONAS overall downstream plans
to optimise the value of the oil and gas
resources found offshore Sabah.

SAMUR :

The project aims at strengthening

PETRONAS Chemicals Groups (PCG)
position as a key regional fertiliser
player, while supporting Malaysias
Economic Transformation Programme
that focuses on the agriculture sector
as one of the National Key Economic
Areas.

Sabah
Ammonia Urea

The SAMUR project was announced in

June 2011. By the end of 2013, up to 50%
of the project works were
completed and commissioning is
scheduled for 2015. The total cost for
project is estimated to be around USD 1.5
billion. It consists of an ammonia plant,
urea plant and a granulation plant, as well
as utilities and jetty facilities.
Both M-10 Builders and Enovent received
contracts for this project but specialising
in different aspects. Enovent handles the
erection, construction and installation of
machinery equipment while M-10 Builders
prepare shop drawing, deal with
engineering detailing and fabrication.

Structural Engineer :
Roles and Functions

Structural engineers are civil

co-ordinate and consult with other

members of their projects, including
engineers, environmental scientists,
architects and landscape
architects. They may also be required to assist government bodies
in their own inspections relating to
the project.
Moreover, structural engineers are
often responsible for the
organisation and delivery of
materials and equipment for the
needs of the construction project. As
the construction of a structure
progresses, structural engineers
serve as site inspectors and help
supervise the execution of blueprints
and the implementation of their
designs.
Structural engineers generally work
in teams and look at the way a
structure is to be built. They ensure
buildings are strong enough to
withstand natural forces and loads
imposed by the nature of its use.
Through research and the testing of
both form and material, new
solutions are developed which
promote safer, more environmentally
friendly buildings and structures.

engineers who are focused on the

constructional and architectural
integrity of various types of public
works.
As a structural engineer, your main
goal will be to ensure that your
project is able to withstand all types
of stress and play a vital role in the
safety and efficiency of many
different types of urban
environments.
Structural engineers must have a
strong grasp of physics,
three-dimensional conceptual skills
and creative problem solving.
As a structural engineer, you play an
active role in the design phase of a
construction project by
determining its structural integrity.
You will use both theoretical
concepts and practical knowledge to
assess how external forces, such as
hurricanes, earthquakes, and
snowstorms could compromise the
architecture of a building or a piece
of infrastructure.
Also, before work can begin,
structural engineers are involved in
the investigation and survey of build
sites to determine the suitability of
the earth (soil condition)for the
requirements of the upcoming
project. Next, structural engineers
will be required to

Construction Industry :
Challenges

During the execution of projects,

dangerous for the workers to carry

out their work. They experience
heavy rainfall and in some cases,
flooding.
At times, drawings are revised during
the on-going project that results in
design changes. For instance, the
dimensions of the structures are
changed or the shifting of
components. As a results, structures
need to be modified to better suit
the newly revised drawings.
On the other hand, there are also
problems arising from the aspect of
workers. Engineering works need
qualified skilled workers for certain
specific task such as welders and
fitters. A welders job is to join
together structural members
together by weldment. To work on
projects, they are required to go
through a qualification test that will
be conducted on site under the
supervision of appointed inspectors.

engineers are faced with many

problems along the way. One of the
problems are caused by non
conformity of parts. This is when
the parts supplied do not meet the
accepted standards set by the main
contractor. Under those
circumstances, the parts will need to
be rectified on site.
Besides that, they experience late
delivery of materials by the supplier.
For that, the engineers are unable to
meet the scheduled progress
leading to a delay in project
completion.
Similary, adverse weather conditions
leads to a delay as well. In certain
project locations, the weather is
unpredictable and may make it more
difficult for wrokers to carry on with
their job if it gets too extreme. Like
for the SAMUR Project, the location
of the site experiences monsoon
season and sometimes gets too
