Drilling Choke Control Panel

The Control
Station during
kick circulation

Operator must
know:

casing surface press

drill pipe pressure
choke position
mud pump rate
volume pumped

To Prevent Plugging of Choke

Manifold and Lines

Pump through system regularly

At initial rig-up
During BOP testing
Do regular Power Choke Drills
Following a Well Control Event
Prior to drilling Transition zone

Trip Tank Policy Section 7.0

Hole will be monitored with trip tank
anytime circulation is suspended
Pump style Trip Tanks required on all wells
Trip book or log must be kept on all trips
Route all returns for possible flow to trip
tank
Measure volume of mud into/out of well
Rig supervisor will be on the drill floor
when each trip begins

Mud-Gas Separator
(Gas Buster)

Separates gas from mud

Siphon Break

Capacity limits governed by:

diameter and height
diameter & length of gas outlet
line
diameter & vertical height of
mud leg
evaluate with KIK program to
determine usable kill rates

Surface BOP Closing Unit

Applies hydraulic
fluid power to
function BOP and
stack valves
Maintains a
reserve of stored
fluid energy
inside a bank of
accumulators

ExxonMobil
Accumulator Design
Volume Requirements
Accumulator useable fluid volume sufficient to provide 1.5
times the volume needed to:
close all rams
close one annular
open the HCV
and retain a minimum operating pressure of 1200 psi on
the accumulator bottle pressure without the assistance of
pumps.

Accumulator Precharge

Precharge is needed
because control fluid
is incompressible

Liquid & gas

separated by a
bladder

Normal precharge is
1000 psi for 3000
psi systems

Only a portion of the

fluid stored is
useable

Calculate Useable Fluid stepApply

First Step Calculate volume of

gas at 3000 psi
P1 x V1 =1015 x 10
= 10150
P2 x V2 =10150
V2 = 10150 / P2
V2 = 10150 / 3015
= 3.36
