    "La Navidad Para Ninos" -- Painesville, Ohio Hello: My name is Richard Herman. I am an immigration lawyer with offices in Cleveland and Painesville. I am privileged to serve immigrant families from around the world. I work with hard-working, undocumented parents from Latin America, who often are fleeing severe poverty or threats of violence in their home country, Their children, often U.S. citizens, struggle to live in two worlds. One world is at the Spanish-speaking home, where one or both of the parents are undocumented and can be arrested and placed in deportation proceedings at any time. These parents work long hours, at low-paying, back-breaking jobs, such as those in agriculture or food processing, so that they can provide for their families. And the other world that the children know soon enough is the English-speaking world they encounter at school, playing and growing-up with children who seemingly have a "normal" life. Sometimes, when a mother or father is deported, I meet with the "surviving" parent in my office, and I see the little children bury their faces in their parent's lap, crying, not able to understand why the other parent is missing, and why their life is not "normal" like the other kids in town. I know this country can do better, fix our immigration laws, and stay true to who we are as a nation. Until that time, when immigration law catches up to the dire needs of families and can provide a path to a normal life, I thought, what can I do NOW for the children at Christmas? While a toy is but a gesture, it can have magical and unknown consequences for a little child whose family has little money and is stuck in a downward spiral of the unknown. A smile, some laughter, and the sparkle in a young child's eyes when Santa gives her a present. That's what I can do. That's the least I can do. In fact, my wife, Kimberly, was once an undocumented immigrant as a child, is now a U.S. citizen and physician, and has given me two beautiful children. That's why Kimberly, our children, and myself have decided to put together a little toy drive for the underprivileged kids from the Spanish-speaking community in two cities near where we live: Willard and Painesville, Ohio. We are calling in La Navidad Para Ninos. During the week of Christmas, we hope to help Santa pass out $3,000 worth of toys for toddlers and kids up to age 13. Half of the toys will go to Willard. And the other half will go to Painesville. The event in Painesville will be as follows: December 25 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm St. Mary's Church Hall 242 N. State Street Painesville, Ohio 44077 All are welcome to join in helping the children and their parents have a great time. I will donate at least $500 to the cause. I have already started purchasing toys and I'm REALLY FEELING THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT! My kids are helping me shop for the toys at various stores, and they have really embraced the spirt of giving.
