ACCREDITATION: Hope College has been fully accredited since 1915 by the Higher
Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Hope also
has professional accreditation in art (NASAD), athletic training (CAAHEP - through 2007)
(CAATE - 2008 and beyond), biochemistry and molecular biology (ASBMB), chemistry
(ACS), dance (NASD), education (NCATE - through August 2011) (TEAC - September 2011
and beyond), engineering (ABET), music (NASM), nursing (NLN - through 2003) (CCNE 2004 and beyond), social work (CSWE), and theatre (NAST). The Department of Homeland
Security, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, has given Hope approval to accept
foreign students for undergraduate training.
CALENDAR: Hope College employs the early semester system. Credit hours on the
transcript are semester hours.

The course offerings at Hope College can be classified into three main divisions: Lower
division (100-299); upper division (300-699); and graduate division (700-899).
Competency levels are reflected at the first digit and are established as follows:
009-099 - No credit courses
300-399 - Junior competency level
100-199 - Freshman competency level
400-699 - Senior competency level
200-299 - Sophomore competency level
700-899 - Graduate level
Four-digit course numbers with leading zeros indicate that these courses either have been
transferred to Hope College or have been earned in an official Hope College off-campus
program.
In most departments, the second digit is used as a sub-discipline grouping. In all
departments, the middle digit "9" refers to honors, seminar, internship, or independent study
courses. The third digit designates either semester sequence (odd - 1st semester, even 2nd semester) or course sequence.
DEGREE REQUIREMENTS: A student is eligible to receive a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of
Music, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree if he/she has met the
following requirements: 1) has completed 126 semester hours, 2) has a minimum
cumulative grade point average of 2.0, 3) has satisfied the general education requirements,
4) has completed a major, 5) beginning with students entering in the Fall, 1978, has a
minimum average of 2.0 in the major.
