ASSESSMENT PLAN

STEP 1- BEFORE THE ASSESSMENT DAY


1. Meet with the participant
Give information about assessment
a. Topic title- Neurovascular observations for orthopedic patients
b. Purpose of assessment - as part of completing checklist of procedures in ward.
c. Assessment benchmarks ANMC Competencies
d. Assessment principles and processes
2. Discuss with participant the assessment requirements.
a. Recognition of prior learning- Participants previous experience in performing N/V Obs in
orthopedic patients on the ward.
b. Whether participant have completed Staff development units self directed learning
package and e-learning on N/V Obs checking for orthopedic patients.
c. Need for the participant to review the handout from the session on N/V Ob checking on the
ward before taking part in the assessment.
3. Discuss regarding assessment method/tools that will be used to collect evidence and
time line for collection of evidence.
a. Completing a questionnaire on N/V obs checking
Date: as negotiated
Time limit: 20 minutes
Participant is assessed by a peer who is competent in the procedure using answer key
developed by the assessor. Marks scored are recorded and feedback is encouraged.
b. Participant will be asked to demonstrate the procedure of checking N/V Obs according to
guidelines on an orthopedic patient on the ward either after completing the questionnaire or at
a negotiated time later.

Date: as negotiated
Time limit: Half an hour
Participant is assessed using an observation checklist and marks are recorded.
c.Final assessment is carried out by the assessor based on participants performance in
assessment item 1 and 2 and 3 against the ANMC competencies.
d. Clarify any questions the participant might have.
4. Discuss reasonable adjustments for special needs.
Special needs of candidate including language, literacy and numeracy if any are addressed
such as need for an interpreter/reader or change in assessment timings or methods.
5. Discuss resources required.
As described in assessment design 3
6. Discuss personnel required.
a. The assessor will nominate a peer (of the participant who is competent to perform NVObs)
to identify a patient on the ward on whom the procedure of N/V Obs can be performed.
b. The participant need to inform the team nurses taking care of patient about the assessment
taking place before hand.
7. Discuss OH&S Issues.
a. Maintaining proper working height.
b. Safety of self and patient.
8. Explain

Competent/not yet competent aspects

Participant will be competent in the assessment if the participant gain 100% marks in the
short answer questionnaire and return demonstration assessment showing a performance level
of L1 in the final assessment.

Appeals and complaint system

Participants can lodge an appeal against assessment decision in writing this will be reviewed
by appeals committee.

STEP 2 - ON THE ASSESSMENT DAY


1. Explain and check
a. Check the participant is ready for assessment.
b. Remind about instructions in the assessment tool.
c. Remind of competent and not yet competent discussed in the tool and need for
reassessment needed if any.
2. Conduct assessment 1 and make decision utilising a peer of the participant
Completing Questionnaire (assessment item1)
a. The colleague has to provide the questionnaire to participant in the interview room.
b. Give participant 20 minutes to write the answers.
c. The peer of the participant mark the completed questionnaire according to the assessors
guide provided with and round final score to 100%. This is followed by their discussion on
right and wrong answers and feedback on learning outcomes.
3. Conduct assessment item 2 on the same day or another negotiated date and make
your decision
Demonstration on patient on the ward (assessment item 2)
a. Remind the time frame of completing demonstration in half an hour on patient on ward.
b. Follow the observation checklist criteria against participants performance.
c. Score the marks on the demonstration part of assessment and score results rounded
to100%.
4. Make decision - Competent or Not yet competent at final assessment and inform
participant the assessment results.

5. Feedback
Assessors feedback.
a. Give verbal feedback, start with positive, and be specific. Feedback about both completing
the questionnaire (making use of feedback already done by peer) and demonstration about
N/V obs checking on orthopedic patients.
b. Discuss appeals further training, plans to reassess if not yet competent.
Participants feedback.
Participant is given time to provide the assessor with feedback on assessment conducted.
Also, participant is encouraged to e-mail the feedback form to the assessor.
STEP-3.
a.Records management File assessment records, collect assessment tool and feedback
process and outcomes.
b.Process of review of assessment- Review the assessment conducted and makes changes as
required.
