Describe the pros and cons of Data Talks (individual, small group, whole class) and Data
Notebooks to promote student engagement and foster student success.

Data talks can be very productive if done correctly, students become active agents in their own
growth. (Berger &Woodfin 2014) Students with the help of their teacher need to analyze the
data, understand it a set up personal goals. Data talks have to be used through out the year and
not only during assessments. Students should have small realistic goals that they can accomplish
and feel good about it. Students must be aware of their starting point so that they may identify
their weaknesses and strengths which can be a powerful encouragement for them to succeed.
Along with setting goals we must give student strategies to help them succeed in their goals.
While younger students need more help from their teachers older students can do a more self
reflective notebook where they can review and set up their own goals and then the teacher can
review and accept or help with the strategies need to accomplish those goals.
The Cons of data talks could be that students set up goals that are too high or unrealistic for the
student. Also if we do not give students the necessary strategies necessary to achieve those
goals, or if we do not review the progress students are making then the effort that the students
make will be in vain. Goals need to change through out the year.
In what ways might Classroom Response Systems (such as "clickers" or apps such as Poll
Everywhere) encourage or discourage active participation?
I believe clickers are a good way for all students to participate, you can tell how many students
click an answer and which one did not. It gives students that are less vocal a chance to voice
their opinion. Clickers can be used for many different activities at different grade levels. They
can be used for multiple choice question, comprehension questions, voting on a certain subject,
having a survey in the classroom. Students can use it to communicate to the teacher if they are

confused about a subject or they do not understand it or if they are clear about it. Also as
students finish a test or an assignment they can click and it shows up on the screen how many
students have answered /finished, thus encouraging students to pick up the pace to finish but it
can also make students who need more time to feel pressured and end up rushing through what
ever the assignment might be. Unfortunately clickers can also be a way to stay always in the
dark and not answer questions or students can click what ever letter without even thinking about
the question they are being asked. (Bruff, )

Discuss the benefits and challenges for teachers of accessing and managing student data,
including privacy issues.

One of the benefits of accessing and managing student data are that educational application
develops collect and analyze student data and assessments in order to help teachers adapt
curriculum to students specific levels. Parents could also access this information about their
students and see how they are progressing in school and in reference with other students. The
challenges are many from data marketing to data breaches and trails that might be hard to erase.
if a student writes about a certain topic over an over then companies will send them emails or
ads asking to buy a certain product because of what s/he wrote about. We have heard in the
news every hear a major data breaches happen to banks, stores all across the nation what makes
student data more secure than any of these institutions. After all with student registration they
have complete social security numbers which makes it an easy target for identity theft. In 2009
in Tennessee, one break left 18,000 k-12 students names, addresses, birth dates and full Social
Security numbers on an unsecured web server for four months (Mind/Shift, 2014). Information
that has been enter into the system now that students are young and make wrong decisions could
potentially alter their adult life If a child is wrongly branded as a trouble maker in third grade
and the profile follows him like the no-fly list thats a problem, (Mind/Shift, 2014)

Describe the importance of aligning instruction and assessment with learning goals and
evaluating learner progress against content standards.
The content standards as well as core standards should be our pathway to the elements we need
to teach in the classroom and what students need to learn through out the year. Our instruction
and the learning goals we set for our students should be aligned so that students are prepared not
only for the standardize testing but also to be successful in their next academic year.
Students need to be evaluated through out the year to progress their growth. Some ways to do
this are through formative assessments through the year which let us know how well students are
understanding the subject matters but also where they need more help. Summative assessments
can helps know how well students learned a subject as whole. It is important to share these
results with the students and show them their results and where they should be according to the
standards, so they know where they where lacking and offer some suggestions and strategies
they can use to improve either for the rest of the lesson/unit or in the next unit.
