Students will be able to reflect on past lessons to fill out a KWL chart on their topic.
Students will present their KWL charts on their topic and present what they know and what

Monitoring Student Learning: Formal and Informal Assessments prior to, during & after
learning segment
Description of formal/ informal assessments:
For their formal assessment, students will fill out their KWL chart that will be collected at the
end of the class. Each student will be given a different colored pencil so the teacher can easily
identify what each student filled out. For their informal assessment, students will be assessed
on their presentation of their KWL charts and the feedback they provide their fellow
classmates.
What is being assessed:
The students will be assessed on their ability to recall facts and presentation skills.
Assessment accommodations:
Students will be provided a graphic organizer to fill out. Teacher will walk around the around
and assist students. Students will also be informed about this assignment the previous day so
they are given the opportunity to look back at their old notes before coming to school.

Type of feedback that will be given to students:


Students will receive feedback after they present their KWL charts in their groups. Teacher will
take notes during each groups presentation and hand it back to them at the end of the
presentation. These feedbacks will include if there was any information wrong and what they
can change in their behavior as they present.
What students will do with the feedback:
Students will be given the opportunity to correct any wrong information the next day in the
library. Students will use the feedback as reference to make room for improvement for their
final presentation.

Students will be reflecting on their prior years of school to fill out their KWL chart on the topic
of their choice.

Most likely when students select what topic they want to present on they will pick a topic that
relates close to their family life or a topic they enjoy learning about.
Motivation/Hook/Anticipatory Set: ( 10 min)
The class will briefly review KWL charts. The teacher will ask questions such as What is KWL
chart? and Who can tell me what KWL stands for?

Closure (5-7 min)


Teacher will review what will be happening tomorrow in class and tell students they can start
doing research on their own at home. Teacher will also provide important tips and skills for
presentations. As a class, everyone will discuss different ideas to present their topic to the
class as the teacher labels these ideas on the board.
How students will reflect on their own learning
Students will reflect on their own learning by using their feedback during their presentation to
better themselves for their final presentation. Students can use the information filled out on
their KWL charts during their final presentation.

Accommodations/Modifications to requirements in IEPs and 504 plans


Students will receive hands on guidance from the teacher. Not all students will be required to
speak during the presentation but must play an active role in creating it. The KWL charts
handed out will be bolded and give lots of writing space for students. Students will be given
extended time if needed. If students are unable to write, hear, or understand English, they will
receive a copy of their groups KWL chart.
Differentiation
Students will also be informed of this lesson the day before so they can come to class with
previous notes. The teacher will help students throughout the completion of the KWL chart.
The KWL chart will also be provided in a translated format for students who cant read English.

The teacher will be writing on a smart board.
