What is poetry?
Poetry is a type of writing that tries to stir a
reader's imagination or emotions.

What does a poet do?


A poet carefully chooses words and organizes them in an
artistic way on the page.
A poet uses rhyme or free verse to convey a big feeling to
their readers.
A poet can arrange the words to show a certain sound,
rhythm, or meaning.
A poet can make a humorous, serious, simple, or
complicated poem. There are many kinds of poems and
they can be about anything.

Interesting facts:
The earliest poems were adapted from folk songs in
modern day China and Egypt.
The oldest epic poem is called the Epic of Gilgamesh,
which was written first on clay tablets in Mesopotamia,
which is modern day Iraq.
Researchers think that poetry was created as a way for
storytellers or historians to be able to remember their
stories more easily.
The earliest known Greek poets are Homer and Hesiod.
