Monsieur Molino

French III
Expos

Imparfaits, Libres, et Heureux :

Parfaites Histoires lImparfait
Quoi ?
As a culminating activity for our unit on storytelling, you will select and complete
one of the exposs (projects) from the following list to demonstrate your
understanding of: storytelling as a way in which authors can transmit cultural and
linguistic information pertinent to their lives.
1. Bande Dessine - Imagine a fictitious character that represents some aspect
of your cultural, national, linguistic, or gender identity. This character will
be the protagonist for a short comic book that you will write in French, draw,
color, edit, and finally present to your peers. The protagonist of your comic
book must resolve some sort of difficult conflict. Feel free to create an
antagonist against whom the main character must toil! Pay close attention to
setting, plot, and character development in order to ensure that your comic
book entices and captivates your audience.
Note: You may use an image editing or comic generating
software if you would like. (Par exemple, Bitstrips, Pixton, and
Toondoo.)
2. Fable - Write, edit, and illustrate
four original fables in French la Fontaine
(notez bien: use the four fables we worked on in class as models). Each fable
should include the following: animal protagonists; a clearly-established
moral that the reader can extrapolate from the fable; a relevant illustration
that encapsulates the main conflict within the fable. All fables must be
culturally relevant in the sense that they reflect some moral and/or ethical
issue that could apply to our modern-day society. Be prepared to read your
fables to the class and have them guess the morals!
Note: Each fable must be at least 10 lines in length. Pay attention
to poetic form. Your illustration should embody the plot of your
fable. (Par exemple, take a look at the picture to the top right of
this sheet. It is an illustration for la Fontaines fable, Le livre
et la tortue .)
3. Vido - Create and edit a short video of 3-5 minutes that successfully
explores one of the following themes, concepts, or events from this unit.
Choose one of the following:

a. Enact a scene from a characters childhood in which an important

cultural event shapes his/her adolescent or adult life. Show how and
why this cultural event is important to the character. You may use
flashbacks or other similar editing tricks to show the time lapse.
Choose a cultural event that all group members are familiar with. (i.e.
Putting a tooth under your pillow and anxiously awaiting the tooth
fairy.) Remember, effective storytelling is key here!
b. Think back to our lesson on Lhomme, la femme, et les animaux. The
story is told from the mans perspective, as he seeks the good graces of
his animal companions in order to recover a magical bracelet that was
stolen from him by his wife. Recreate the folklore from the womans
perspective, as she seeks the aid of the dog, the cat, and the mouse
from the story to resolve the conflict from her perspective. In this
Burkinab legend, the woman does not have a voice; the purpose of
this skit is to give her a voice and to tell her story, whatever that might
be! Soyez cratifs !
c. Take a cultural narrative that children all across America would be
familiar with and rewrite it from a different perspective. For instance,
Beauty and the Beast takes place in an aristocratic French context
and with an all-white cast. How might the story be different if it took
place right here in Newark with a different set of characters? Write
the script and create a video clip in French of your new story.

Qui ?
Expos #1
:
Bande Dessine
This is an individual project.
Expos #2 :
Fable This is a paired project; each member of the diad is
responsible for producing
two
fables, for a grand total of
four
.
Expos #3 :
Vido This is a group project (3-4 people). Each member of the
group will be responsible for writing and editing the script, performing in the skit
(and speaking French, of course!), and editing the video.

Comment ?
Regardless of the expos you choose, you
must incorporate the following elements
into your project:
Limparfait Since the imperfect was the primary grammatical focus of
this unit, I will be looking for proper usage of this tense within your project.
You must have
5 regular verbs in the imperfect and
5 irregular
verbs
in the imperfect.
Laccent mis sur la narration The focus of this unit is on narration and
storytelling - this should be reflected in your creation(s)!
I am looking for protagonists (and possibly antagonists), a conflict
and resolution, a lesson or moral, attention to form and structure, and
transmission of culture through your storytelling!

Quand ?
You will have two full class periods to work on this assignment. The rest of the
work will take place outside of the classroom or after school should you so choose.
(I am available until 3:30 every day!) The assignment is due
Thursday, May 21st
.
Presentations will begin on Thursday and end on Friday.
ATTENTION
! You and your group members will present your comic book, fable, or
cultural video to a group of elementary and middle school students at Newark
Public Librarys after-school program on
Friday, May 29th
!

Pourquoi ?
For centuries, storytelling has been a way to pass on cultural and linguistic wisdom
from one generation to the next. Now, its your turn!
The imperfect tense is one of the most important tenses in French, as it allows you
to describe events that took place over a period of time in the past, habitual actions,
or states of being. It is a tense that is commonly tested on oral proficiency exams.
Imaginons !
Youre at a caf in Paris reading an enchanting book and
having a delicious afternoon snack. (
Pain au chocolat, anyone?!) A charming
French person walks up to your table and asks you about what youre
reading. You enjoy the conversation that is taking place
in the present tense
,
but then your new French companion asks you to talk about your life back in
the United States, or asks you a question about your experiences learning
French in high school, or asks you to talk about what it was like to grow up
in New Jersey. You cant accomplish any of these tasks without the
imperfect!
La Fontaine sought to create aesthetically pleasing and morally enlightening fables
despite the relative unpopularity of fable-writing as a legitimate literary genre in
the 17th century. Its important to
create cultural products not only as a
demonstration of your understanding of a topic or unique perspective on a subject
or issue, but also for the aestheticism associated with the creative process.

A loeuvre, on connat lartisan.

In his work, we get to know the craftsman.
