Onset and Rime Lesson Plan 12/10/15

Topic: Onset and Rime

Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2.C Blend and segment onsets
and rimes of single-syllable spoken words.
Objective: Students will be able to blend onsets and rimes to read and
write one-syllable words when given the onset and the rime.
Student-Friendly Objective: Write the word pig on the board, and
separate it into onset and rime.
Assessment Plan: Have the students say real and nonsense words
they found, to see if they are sounding out onsets and rimes, and to
see if they are able to figure out which words are real and which are
not.
Materials Needed:
Hooray for Reading Day by Margery Cuyler
Onset and Rime Slide Game

Pencils
Key Vocabulary: Onset, Rime
Anticipatory Set (Gain Attention/Motivation/Recall Prior Knowledge):
Ask Why is it important to learn letter names and sounds?
Why do we need to learn to read?
Read the book Hooray for Reading Day by Margery Cuyler.
o This book is about Jessica, who tries to read aloud in class
but stumbles over the words and everyone laughs. Now the
upcoming Reading Theater day has her more worried than
ever. What if she makes a mistake in front of all the
parents? With the help of her family, and some practice,
Jessica faces her reading worries and finds that reading
aloud can be as easy as A-B-C!
Explain that today we will be learning and practicing blending the
sounds of letters together to make words. This will prepare them
to start reading.
Instructional Inputs:
Let the students know to raise their hands if they want to answer
a question.

If the students are being too loud, get their attention back to you
and wait until they are quiet and listening.
Help the students understand why we are learning to blend
onsets and rimes. They are learning this to help them prepare for
reading.
Encourage the students to sound out words if they do not know
them right away.

Modeling:
Draw two columns on the whiteboard. One that says Real
Words and one that says Nonsense Words just like on the
worksheet they get.
Model how to play the onset and rime game. You slide the paper
with onsets through the paper with rimes to find words. Once you
have put an onset with a rime, you will read the word aloud and
decide if it is a real word or a nonsense word.
After you have decided if the word is real or nonsense, you will
write that word on the whiteboard in the column where it
belongs.
Guided practice:
Follow the same steps outlined under modeling, but instead of
the teacher doing all the work, allow the students to do the work,
with your help.
Once they have shown they understand how the game works,
send them back to their desk to do the game.
Closure:
Remind the students that as they practice with onsets and rimes, they
will learn to blend words which will help them learn to read.

Independent practice/application:
Let the students play the game at their desks. There will be one
game for each table, but each student will get their own paper to
write real and nonsense words on.
Differentiation
For struggling learners, I will go around to help them if needed. I
can do more guided practice with them to help them have oneon-one learning that may better help them understand.
For students that are ahead, when they have completed one set
of onsets and rimes, I will hand them another set that is a little
more difficult to try and deepen their understanding of the
concept.

Transition:
Tell the students that it is almost time to go to recess, and they
need to listen to Mrs. Radford for instructions.
