RESIDENT PROFILE
William Regensburger
William (Bill) August Regensburger was born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania in
1924. He served in World War II at Tinian Island when the Enola Gay flew its
historic flights. Shortly after being discharged from the Army Air Corps, he
married Sally, his junior high school sweetheart. They had been married for 65
years when she passed away in 2013.
Bill worked at the Equitable Gas Company in Pittsburgh, PA for over 30 years
and retired in 1985. His career there began as a meter reader and ended as an
accountant. After retiring, Bill and Sally moved to Virginia to be near their daughter, Jean-Marie and eventually moved in with Jean-Marie and Steve Myers in
Williamsburg, VA.
Although Bill and Sally camped along the east coast for decades, they had never been west of the Mississippi until
they moved to Sun City Festival in 2009 with Steve and Jean-Marie.
Currently, Bill is living with his daughter and son-in-law. He has three children, four grandchildren, and 14 greatgrandchildren. You might see Bill sitting in the Cyber Caf making plarn for the Knit One Crochet Too Club. He
enjoys keeping busy in making crafts, loves to play cards, and do word-seek puzzles.

FITNESS CLASSES
What Exercise
Should I Do First?
A common question with workouts is, which exercise or what type of exercise to do
first? Is aerobic exercise supposed to be done before the strength training? Which
muscles should be worked first when lifting weights? Does the order in which these
exercises are done make any difference? The answer inevitably comes down to
that depends.
For general fitness and weight control, aerobic/cardiovascular
exercise should be performed first followed by strength training.
This guideline is important to follow in order to ensure proper
warm-up prior to the hard effort of strength training. The increased
blood flow to muscles from the aerobic activity minimizes risk of
muscle pulls and tears and provides better performance. Though,
like many other things, some of it comes down to which way you
are most likely to do it. If you prefer a particular sequence, and
youre likely to be consistent, stick to it.
If weight training is being performed on a day when aerobic
exercise is not done, some type of warm-up exercise is still
important. Five to ten minutes of activity can provide an adequate warm-up. Also critical is to include full-body activity
(nu-step machine or elliptical with arm exercise) to loosen
and warm-up the muscles of the upper body.
Another factor in determining the order in which exercise is
performed is priority. If cardiovascular fitness is most important, (for performance
or other reasons) emphasis should be on performing that exercise first when the
body is not fatigued from other exercise. If strength and muscle gains are most
important, weight training should be performed first (after adequate warm-up) when
the body is fresh and not yet fatigued.
When performing weight lifting exercises, the ideal order is to work large muscles
first, then exercise the small muscles. The large muscles consist of the legs, chest
and back. Smaller muscles are those of the shoulders and upper arms. This guideline is also dependent on priority. If the goal is to work specific muscles (not necessarily all of them) during a session, the focus would be on those particular muscles.
A way to create additional challenge is to vary the order in which
strength exercises are performed. When working small muscles first,
you create a greater challenge when exercising larger muscles later.
The order in which exercises are completed has an impact on overall
quality and safety of an exercise session. However, some decision
on what should be done first lies within goals and priorities as well as
personal preference.
