Most Reliable Fantasy Baseball Second Basemen

Just as Albert Pujols is the clear-cut choice among the first basemen, so too is Chase
Utley the runaway pick for the most reliable fantasy baseball second basemen. The
difference between the two positions is that there is not nearly as much depth
among second basemen as there is among first-sackers.

It’s quite possible that you could end the year with someone who picked from a
waiver wire or who was a throw-in in a trade.

1. Chase Utley, Philadelphia Phillies – He would be a standout at any position.

His average and power numbers dipped in 2009, but he still swiped 23 bases.
At 31 he’s still in his prime. Just ask the Yankees.

2. Dustin Pedroia, Boston Red Sox – The Red Sox mighty mite battled injury and
off the field issues in 2009, but still approached career averages.

3. Robinson Cano, New York Yankees – Cano hits for both average and power
but he’s not a threat on the bases like Pedroia.

4. Ian Kinsler, Texas Rangers – If Kinsler added 30 points to his average (.253 in
2009) he’d give Utley a run for his money as the most reliable fantasy
baseball second basemen.

5. Brian Roberts, Baltimore Orioles – All he does is produce. If healthy, he’ll

score 100 runs, bat near .300 and slug near .450. He might be the most
reliable fantasy second basemen of them all.

6. Aaron Hill, Toronto Blue Jays – Even if Hill doesn’t match last year’s totals and
reverts back to his pre-2009 form he’s still puts up Brian Roberts-type
numbers minus the stolen bases.

7. Brandon Phillips, Cincinnati Reds – The oft-maligned Phillips is more

productive than his critics would have you think. In 2007, he was a 30-30
man and last year had a career-high 98 RBI in a weak Reds’ lineup.

8. Dan Uggla, Florida Marlins – He hits for power and doesn’t do much else. If
strikeouts are a factor in your league you may want to take a pass on Uggla.

9. Ben Zobrist, Tampa Bay Rays – He went from being a serviceable utility
player to a second baseman who hit 27 homers and batted .306. Can he do it
again? Or can he top himself? Zobrist is the major wild card among second
basemen.

10.Ian Stewart, Colorado Rockies – Call it the Mile High Effect. A regular in the
Rockies lineup will post good numbers by accident.
Sleeper picks for the most reliable fantasy baseball second basemen: Howie
Kendrick, Los Angeles Angels; Asdrubal Cabrera, Cleveland Indians; Jose Lopez,
Seattle Mariners
