Program Description

The goal of this conference is to enhance the health and


well-being of members of the transgender community by (1)
increasing the number of mental health and medical health care
providers who feel comfortable and confident providing care
for transgender patients; (2) increasing transgender community
members knowledge, self-efficacy and advocacy skills through
transgender centered educational sessions.

Target Audience

Physicians specializing in primary care, obstetrics, endocrinology,


and emergency medicine, nurses, psychologists, physician
assistants, social workers, licensed mental health providers,
medical students, residents, fellows, and members of the
transgender community.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity...


Primary care providers should be able to:
1. Describe professional guidelines established for the
appropriate care of transgender adolescents and adults
2. Identify the risks/benefits of hormone therapy, design a plan
of care that incorporates above guidelines
3. Compare and contrast the unique primary care needs of
male to female and female to male transgender patients
4. Participate in advanced medical care cases
Mental health providers should be able to:
5. Identify mental health issues unique to transgender
individuals and better understand role of the mental health
professional through transition
6. Recognize sexual health needs of transgender patients and
gain confidence in addressing these with patients
7. Participate in advanced behavioral health cases
Members of the transgender community should be able to:
8. Identify and discuss their legal needs and best strategies to
meet these needs.
9. Discuss social identities and ways to develop positive
masculine and feminine identities. As well as the importance
of the intersection of race, ethnicity and class in these
identities
10. Identify everyday issues faced by transgender community
members and ways to address them.

Accreditation

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance


with the accreditation requirements and policies of the
Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME)
through the joint providership of The Warren Alpert Medical
School of Brown University and the Rhode Island College School
of Social Work. The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown
University is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing
medical education for physicians.

Credit Designation

Physicians: The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown


University designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.5
AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only the
credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the
activity.
Physician Assistants/Nurse Practitioners: Participants will receive
a Certificate of Attendance stating this program is designated for
6.5 hours AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. This credit is accepted
by the AAPA and AANP.
Nurses: This activity has been submitted to Northeast Multi-

State Division (NE-MSD) for approval to award nursing contact


hours. Northeast Multistate Division (NE-MSD) is accredited as an
approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses
Credentialing Centers Commission on Accreditation.

Psychologists: The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown


University has been approved by the Rhode Island Psychological
Association to offer continuing education credits for Psychologists.
The Alpert Medical School maintains responsibility for the
program. This program is approved for 6.5 Category 1 CE Credit.
(Credits available to RI licensed psychologists only).
Social Workers: This activity has been submitted for approval by
School of Social Work - CWI for 6.5 CEs (3.5 Regular, 3.0 cultural).
Authorization number pending.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations/substitutions must be made in writing to the


Brown CME Office at least two weeks prior to the conference,

for all refunds. (No refunds for no shows). There will be no
additional charge for substitutions. This conference is subject to
change or cancellation.
