2015 NEWSIE EDITION

Every dollar matters

The 85th running of the Newsie sale

asoline is back below $2 per gallon.

Michigan and national unemployment rates
are around 5 percent.
Factories have rebounded and construction
has picked up, and University of Michigan economists are
projecting strong growth for 2016.
At a glance, it appears these could be the good old days.
The Great Recession is tiny in the rearview mirror.
But rising tides dont lift all boats. Never have.
The hard cases are still out there in abundance, and they
seem all the harder in the months of opulence that mark
the holiday season. Furthermore, the American safety net
for the poor is a shadow of its former self.
That is where the annual Good Fellow Fund comes in.
Your donation to the Good Fellow Fund in exchange for
this special edition of The Herald-Palladium helps deliver
a bit of comfort and joy for Southwest Michigans struggling families.
The HP covers administrative costs, which means every
dollar you donate goes to families in need.
The fund covers Meijer gift cards for Berrien County
families and single adults identified by the Michigan Department of Human Services as being in need.
This years goal, matching last years, is $35,000. Last
years drive fell about $1,200 short of the goal a gap area
service clubs are determined to overcome with todays sale
and ensuing contributions.
The record is $37,802, set in 2013.
Today is the Good Fellow Funds biggest day, when members of the St. Joseph, St. Joseph Township and Lakeshore
Lions Clubs take to the streets to peddle Newsies.
In addition, the Exchange Club of Southwest Michigan
will be out in full force.
For the second year, Students Against Destructive Decisions chapters in Coloma and Watervliet will be on the
streets of those communities.
The drive continues through December. Make additional
donations in care of The Herald-Palladium at P.O. Box
128, St. Joseph, MI 49085.
