Bornin1876inCadiz,thehistoricalseaporttownatthesouthernmosttipof
Andalucia,ManueldeFallaisthegreatestSpanishcomposerofthiscentury.His
formalmusicaleducationbeganwithpianolessons,andwhenFallawastwentyhis
familymovedtoMadridwherehestudiedwiththedistinguishedteacherJosTrag.
HethenwentontostudycompositionwithFelipePedrell,theteacherandscholar
wholedtherevivalofSpanishmusicwhichtookplacetowardstheendofthe
nineteenthcentury.
In1904Falla'soneactoperaLavidabreve(LifeisShort)wonthecomposition
competitionoftheRealAcademiadeBellasArtesandatthesametimehewas
awardedaprestigiouspianoprizeorganisedbythepianomakersOrtizyCuss.In
1907heachievedalongheldambitionoftravellingtoParisandwaswelcomed
therebyRavel,Debussy(withwhomhehadpreviouslycorresponded)and
especiallybyPaulDukas.Hecompletedseveralchamberworksandbeganworkon
NochesenlosjardinesdeEspna(NightsinGardensofSpain)beforetheoutbreak
ofwarin1914compelledhimtoreturntohisnativecountry.
TwoyearslaterhewasapproachedbyDiaghilevtowriteaworkfortheRussian
Balletandinresponsecomposedamimeplayintwotableaux,Elcorregidoryla
molinera(TheMagistrateandtheMiller'sWife)which,withsomesubsequent
revisions,becameElsombrerodetrespicos(TheThreeCorneredHat),andwas
producedhighlysuccessfullyinLondonin1919withchoreographybyMassineand
designsbyPicasso.
Followingthedeathsofhisparentsin1919hesettledinGranada,whereheremaineduntiltheendoftheCivilWar(1939),
andcomposedseveralofhismostimportantworksincludingElretablodemaesePedro(MasterPeter'sPuppetShow),
PsychandConcertoperclavicembalo(HarpsichordConcerto).HethenmovedtoArgentinaandworkedthereuntilhisdeath
in1946justafewdaysbeforehis70thbirthday,leavingthevastoratorioAtlntidastillunfinished.
