Short for Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc, a DVD or DVD-ROM, is a disc
capable of storing large amounts of data on one disc the size of a standard Compact
Disc. CD/DVD drives were first sold in 1997, today they are widely used for storing
and viewing movies and other data.
How much can a DVD hold?

One of the most common DVD's is the single-sided, single-layer disc, capable
of holding 4.7 GB.

The single-sided, double-layer disc is capable of holding between 8.5-8.7 GB.

The double-sided, single-layer disc is capable of holding 9.4 GB.

Although rare, the double-sided, double-layer disc is capable of holding up to

17.08 GB.

Different DVDs can hold certain amount of data but mainly if A DVD has a lot of
storage they mainly cost more than the less amount of storage DVDs.
Different Types of DVDs
DVD-R
DVD-R is an optical disc storage format. DVD-R is a write-once format where the
initial record is burned permanently into the disc and cannot be erased. A DVD-R's
approximate lifespan is 100 years. Also DVD-R can hold up to 4.7GB however they
have developed a dual layer version which can hold 8.5 which was developed in
2005 and by Pioneer. Like CD-Rs, DVD recordable use dyes depending on the
intensity of the laser.
The Minus in DVD-R (it being a CD or DVD) You cannot add more data to the disc
once the burning has locked it (even if there is room for more). Some systems are
able to do a multisession on the -R discs (like DVD Recorders) but not all systems
are designed to read these extra sessions. The DVD-R Is compatible with almost
every popular software and computers so can be used frequently.
A DVD-R can only record data once and then the data becomes permanent on the
disc. The disc cannot be recorded onto a second time. There also are two standards

for DVD-R disks: DVD-RG for general use, and DVD-RA for authoring, which is used
for mastering DVD video or data and is not typically available to the general public.

DVD-RW
DVD+RW is similar to DVD-R because it holds the same amount of storage 4.7GB
however there is some advantages for RW. The advantage of DVD-RW over DVD+R
is the ability to erase and rewrite to a DVD+RW disc. According to Pioneer, DVD-RW
discs may be written to about 1,000 times before needing replacement unlike the
DVD-R. The DVD-R can be used to store images, sound and video.
DVD+RW
A DVD+RW is also similar to a DVD_R. a re-recordable DVD format similar to CDRW or DVD+RW. The data on a DVD+RW disc can be erased and recorded over
numerous times without damaging the medium. DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM
are supported by Panasonic, Toshiba, Apple Computer, Hitachi, Pioneer, Samsung
and Sharp.

DVD DL (Dual Layer)

Dual layer and double layer DVDs are the same thing and are also referred to as
DVD-9 discs and have a capacity of 8.5GB. Unlike the single layer DVDs, they can
hold a lot more storage on each disk. Dual Layers consists of 2 individual layers
combined into a single disk. To be able to use the DVD DL you have to have a
software which will burn the Dual layers. A DVD DL can only be read once so you
cannot erase the media on the disk after you burn it.

Difference between R +R and RW

The minus, plus and Rs tells you what kind of burnable media you are using and
how the data is stored. The different markings also show you how long lifespan you
can expect. The different kinds of media, use different types of materials. The
ROM media can easily (with proper care and storage) be expected to last many
years, and the cheapest RW media can be expected to be unreadable after as little
as 6 months.

Audio
DVD-Audio (commonly abbreviated as DVD-A) is a digital format for delivering highfidelity audio content on a DVD. The first discs entered the marketplace in 2000, The
new DVD format is said to provide at least twice the sound quality of audio CD on
disks that can contain up to seven times as much information. Various types of DVDA-compatible DVD players are being manufactured, in addition to the DVD-A players
specifically developed for the format. Almost all of the space on a DVD video disc is
devoted to containing video data. As a consequence, the space allotted to audio
data, such as a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, is severely limited. A lossy
compression technique - so-called because some of the data is lost - is used to
enable audio information to be stored in the available space, both on standard CDs
and DVD-Video disks.
Video
DVD-Video is a consumer video format used to store digital video on DVD discs, and
is currently the dominant consumer video format in Asia, North America, Europe, and
Australia. There are four basic constructions of the DVD depending on one's optical
storage requirements: single-sided single layer, single-sided double layer, doublesided single layer and double-sided double layer.

Menus
Menus are used in DVDs for the user to navigate around the DVD. Such as controls
are very popular in a DVD menu. Also some DVDs have a splash page and contains
different sections to the DVD such as different parts of the DVD and additional
features.
