    InthisShakespeareansonnet,thenarratorbattleswithhisinnervoiceoverthe
    endearmentofhismistress:knowingthatthelossofhislovewillsealthefateofhisalterego,he
    decideswhethertoactashistrueself,orashislovesideal.Theflourishingdictionthroughout
    thispoemhelpstopushthisidea,asShakespeareincorporatesamultitudeofdifferentsentence
    varietyandfigurativelanguage.Hisuseofbrilliantimageryhelpsexplaintothereaderthe
    situationthatthenarratorofthepoemisin,andhowthenarratoristornbetweenthelossofhis
    alterego,orhislove.Throughhisvividimagery,weareabletodetectthesorrowandfeelingof
    indecisivenessinthetoneofthispoem.Specifically,inlinenine,theuseofsoftconsonance
    lose,loss,lovehelpstoconveythenarrator'sgrieftowardsthethoughtoflosinghislover.
    Also,therepetitiveuseofthesoundl,whichoccursallthroughoutthepoem,suggeststhe
    feelingoflossandlove.Becauseofhisuseofrepetitionofsofterconsonantsandvowels,weare
    abletoinferthedistraughtfeelingthatthenarratorisfeeling.Anexampleofthisarethewords,
    loved,dearly,loss,andsuffring.Thesesoftersoundshelptogivethepoemalighter
    note,takingthepoemtoadeeperemotionallevel,andinturnputtingitsreadersintoastateof
    melancholy.Buttowardstheendofthesonnet,Shakespearetakeshisreadersintoarelieved
    mindset,givingushopebyintroducingaresolution:Butheresthejoy,myfriendandIare
    one,(line13).Thislinedirectlycontrastswiththeprevious12lines,switchingfromatoneof
    melancholy,tooneofrelief.Ultimately,thepoetovercomesthebattlewithhisinnerself.He
    triumphsoverhisalterego,winningtheloveofhismistress,suggestingthatmanyofusare
    strugglingwithourproblemsandblamingthemonothers.Whileweourselvesaretherootofour
    conflicts.
