Tutorial Assignment Set No. 5

1. Forced air at a temperature of 25C ( = 16.6910-6 m2/s, k = 26.910-3 W/mK, Pr = 0.703)
and a velocity of 10 m/s is used to cool an electronic chip of 4 mm x 4 mm, located 120
mm from the leading edge of a circuit board. The convection heat transfer can be correlated
by an expression of = 0.040.85 1/3. Calculate the surface temperature of the chip
if it dissipates 30 mW of heat.
Ts = 42.5C

2. Forced air ( = 15.8910-6 m2/s, k = 26.9 10-3 W/mK, Pr = 0.707) at 30C and 100 m/s is
used to cool a flat plate with width of 20 cm and length of 30 cm. The air is flowing in
parallel along the length of the plate. Experiments have revealed that the average
convection coefficient on the top of the plate is correlated by an expression of the
form
= 0.040.8 1/3. Calculate the average convection heat transfer from the top
surface to the air if the surface temperature of the plate is 50C.
q = 402.23 W
3. In an experiment, air ( = 15.8910-6 m2/s, k = 26.910-3 W/mK, Pr = 0.707) at 30C and 10
m/s flows in parallel along a flat plate with width of 20 cm and length of 300 cm. The
result of the experiment shows that the convection heat transfer coefficient for the air above
the plate is 335.19 W/m2K. In order to estimate the convection heat transfer from the car
roof to the surrounding air when driving on a sunny day, the roof of a car can be modelled
as a flat plate with width of 1 m and length of 1.5 m. The car is moving at 20 m/s at
ambient air ( = 15.8910-6 m2/s, k = 26.910-3 W/mK, Pr = 0.707) at a temperature of 30C.
The outer surface temperature of the car roof is estimated to be 50C. Calculate the average
convection heat transfer from the car roof to the surrounding air.
q = 2011.158 W

4. A 1 m long and 1 cm thick flat plate is subjected to a parallel flow of air at -15C and
velocity of 30.8 m/s through the upper surface of the plate. The thermal conductivity of
the plate is 1.4 W/mK. The average Nusselt number at the upper surface can be correlated
by
= 0.030.8 0.33 . Air properties are: k = 0.023 W/mK, = 12.510-6 m2/s, and
Pr = 0.71. Hot air at a temperature of 50C is in parallel flow through the lower surface of
the plate maintaining the lower surface temperature of the plate at 10C. Evaluate the upper
surface temperature of the plate. Will there be any formation of ice layer at the upper
surface of the plate? Why?
Tup = 1.02C

5. When driving in the early morning, the interior air temperature of the vehicle is at 25C.
In order to avoid the water vapour condensation at the inner surface of the windshield, the
inner surface temperature must be at least 18C. Consider a windshield (kg = 1.4 W/mK)
of length L = 800 mm and thickness t = 6 mm and driving condition for which the vehicle
moves at a velocity of 31.3 m/s in ambient air (ka = 0.0263 W/mK, = 15.8910-6 m2/s,
Pr = 0.707) at 15C. From the laboratory experiments performed on a model vehicle, the
average convection coefficient on the outer surface of the windshield can be correlated by

= 0.030.8 0.33 . Calculate the temperature at the outer surface of the windshield.
Tout = 17.24C
6. An industrial process involves evaporation of a thin water film from contoured surface by
heating it from below and forcing air across it. Laboratory measurements for this surface

length of 1 m and surface area of 1 m2. Just enough energy is supplied to maintain its
steady state temperature at 310 K. Determine the rate of heat loss from the surface by
convection.
