Geometry
Michigan Curriculum Framework Content Standards and Benchmarks:
CCSS.Math.Content.HSG.CO.B.7
Use the definition of congruence in terms of rigid motions to show that two triangles
are congruent if and only if corresponding pairs of sides and corresponding pairs of
angles are congruent.
CCSS.Math.Content.HSG.CO.B.8
Explain how the criteria for triangle congruence (ASA, SAS, and SSS) follow from the
definition of congruence in terms of rigid motions.
CCSS.Math.Content.HSG.CO.C.10
Prove theorems about triangles. Theorems include: measures of interior angles of a
triangle sum to 180; base angles of isosceles triangles are congruent; the segment
joining midpoints of two sides of a triangle is parallel to the third side and half the
length; the medians of a triangle meet at a point.
Unit Outcome:
Students will be able to classify triangles by their sides and angles as well as
identify and prove congruence in triangles. They will also work with transformations
and be able to understand how congruence works in a transformation process.
Lesson Outcomes:
TLW be able to prove the congruence of corresponding sides and angles of
congruent triangles.
TLW be able to write geometric proofs.
Rationale/Purpose for Lesson:
The ability to write mathematical proofs correctly provides the student with the
opportunity to improve the way in which they support and prove their thoughts and
arguments. Understanding of theorems, definitions, postulates, and properties
gives the student a better understanding of what they are and are not allowed to do
mathematically as well as support for why they are taking the steps/path they are
following in order to solve a problem.
Assessment:
The students will be given the chance to go over as well as correct the homework
from over the weekend. They will then be asked to help in going through one of the
homework problems. The students will then be given the chance to work on more
problems in groups during the rest of class while the teacher is walking around
answering questions and providing input.

Resources/Materials Required:
-

White Board
Dry Erase Markers
Geometry Book
Notebook
Writing Utensil
Overhead Projector
Computer

Procedures:
-

Quizzes from the previous week will be handed back and the students will be
given a two minutes to go over them with the people sitting around them.
The teacher will then go over the answers with the students and field any
questions that they may have.
Once all the questions have been handled about the quiz, the students will
exchange homework and start grading their peers papers. The answers will
be presented on the projector for the students.
Students will return their papers to the original owners when they have
completed the grading and grades will be quickly entered into the system.
The teacher will pull one of the questions from the homework to present on
the board. The answers to the original question will be presented on the
board by the teacher and then the students will be asked to think about
where they could go from there.
The teacher will lead the students into thinking about what they can know
from the information they have already learned and what is presented in the
problem. The teacher will get the students to look back at previous section in
order for them to remember information that will help them with the new
section.
Once the new concept is presented, the teacher will have the students copy
the proofs from a worksheet.
After the work has been copied, the teacher will walk through a couple of the
problems with the students.
Once the teacher has started work on some of the problems, the student will
be given time to work in groups to complete the rest of them.
Work that is not completed in class will then become homework.

Homework:
Homework has already been assigned and passed out at the beginning of the
trimester. Students will be reminded to look at their green sheets for the homework
that is due the next day.
Closure:
The students will be reminded that they will have a quiz the following day and that
they need to study the last two sections in order to do well. They will be given
another chance for question and answer at the beginning of the following days
lesson.
