We read in our text books on page 447 what a Newton is. How would you
explain what a Newton is to someone who doesn’t have any idea what it is?

We are going to test several objects and to see how many Newtons of force is
needed to move each one. We will test them on different surfaces.
The objects you are testing are a pocket dictionary, a tape dispenser, and a bottle
of glue. You will hang each object to see how many Newtons it would take to
lift each object. Then you will drag the objects on the tile floor, carpet, and up
the slide to see how many Newtons is used on each surface. Fill in the chart as
you go!

What is the force pulling down on the object as you lift it in air? __________________
What is the force that is acting on the object as you pull it along the floor and the carpet
and up the slide? __________________________
Why does it require more Newtons to move the objects on the carpet than it does on the
tile? ___________________________________________________________________

Make a prediction: how many Newtons do you think it would take to move the tape
dispenser along the tile floor if we put water on the floor? _________________________
