Constantine (Goryanov), Metropolit of Petrozavodsk and Karelia, Prof. The beginning of the
subsequent: towards the 500th anniversary of St.Joseph of Volokolamsk
The paper is devoted to the person and deeds of the great Russian Saint Joseph of Volokolamsk.
Five hundred years later the author of the article considers within the historical context the
contemporary meaning of St.Josephs monastic and state services. These services are proven
to be a heroic feat, in particular, as a hazardous struggle against the foreign invaders, who
encroached into Russia, personified by Skharia the Jew and his coreligionists, and were
armed not with guns, but with a pernicious ideology which was later to be called the
Judaizers heresy. Both the notion of a heresy in general and that of the Judaizers heresy,
in particular, are given a substantial treatment, while the reasons of the emergence of a great
number of this teachings adherents, despite its hostility towards the traditional Orthodoxy,
are cleared up. In the historical context of the article not only factual events of the Judaizers
ideological expansion are reflected, but those measures which were taken in due time by
those wise pillars of the Russian Orthodox Church as Joseph of Volokolamsk and Gennadius
of Novgorod, are treated. The relationship between the adherents of Joseph and the nonpossessors is also analyzed. As a result, we argue that some historians conception of Joseph
of Volokolamsk and Neilus of Sora having been ideological opponents tends to be false. The
actual meaning of St.Josephs heroic feat is seen by the author in its state dimension, whereby
the role of iosifljanstvo (the teaching of St.Joseph) as the basis of the 16th- and 17th-century
ideology of the Russian Orthodox Church is underlined. Saint Joseph was one of the first
persons to realize that the heresy sought to undermine the state foundations of Russia and
that the struggle against it was a fight for the sovereignty of the Russian state. Now, when
Russia is destined to face with a number of ideological challenges, including the unhidden
theomachy (struggle against God), it is hard to overestimate the meaning of St.Josephs
feat. Using the notions of a dynamic and an actual infinity, as well as an armory of other
theological and philosophical categories, the author extrapolates the importance of this feat
both into the Future and unto the Eternity.

Archimandrite Macary (Veretennikov). Concerning the Nationality of the Metropolitan PhilipposI
Tone of the vexing questions concerning the biography of the third autocephalous Metro
politan of the Russian Orthodox Church St.PhilipposI (14641473) is discussed in the ar

ticle. His personality is almost unknown in the historiography. Especially obscure appears to
be the time before his ordination as the Metropolitan of the Moscow Rus. The key question
here is the origin of the future Metropolitan. The historiography of the problem is analyzed,
and, as a result, the different points of view on the problem and lines of reasoning concern
ing it are singled out. On the basis of a profound source analysis we prove the Greek origin
of Philippos I. It is in this light that we disclose the future activities of the Metropolitan. The
early stages of his biography, which have been reconstructed by us, now look as follows. He
was born in Byzantium at the beginning of the 15th century. He lived in Constantinople and
served as a patriarchal clerk there. During the tonsure, he was renamed Philippos in honour
of the Apostle Philippos. His arrival to Rus might have taken place soon after the demise of
the Metropolitan Photius, i.e., after 1431. If this were the case, then, it would be Patriarch
Joseph II (14161439) who could send him to Rus. Philippos remained in Russia later on. He
stayed in the new country for a long time, became russified to such an extent that almost no
traces of the memory about his Greek provenance were to be seen. It was in Rus which had
become his second homeland by then that he survived the tragedy of the fall of Byzantium.
In the late 40-es of the 15th century the acts of the Savior-Eufthymius monastery mentioned
an archimandrite Philippos who was supposed to become the bishop of Suzdal later on, and
then to turn into the Metropolitan of the whole Rus. During all the time of his tenure the
Greek Metropolitan fervently supported the interests of the Orthodoxy in Rus both on the
extra- and intraecclesiastical levels.

Nadezhda S. Karimova. On the Imperial Awards for the Clergy and Laymen of the Ekate
rinburg Diocese of the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries
The article is dedicated to the clergy and laymen of the Ekaterinburg diocese being decorated
with the imperial state awards for their services to the Church. The motives for the decorations
are considered, and the cases of conferring to persons concrete orders and medals (such as
the order of the Saint Apostle-like Vladimir, that of St. Ann, of St. Stanislav, the medal For
fervor, and the bosom cross with decorations from the study of His Majesty) are singled out.
Among those decorated there were both famous Church personalities who were to become
confessors and holy martyrs, and active parishioners, merchants, the clerks of the spiritual
consistory and of the ecclesiastical schools, workers and peasants. And in each case we are
faced with different peoples destinies and feats against the general background of their epoch
fraught with momentous events. During the reign of St. NicholasII (18941917) we may
count no less than 380 persons in the diocese who were decorated with the abovementioned
orders and medals, including ca. 140 ecclesiastics who were presented to the different degrees
of the orders of St. Vladimir and of St. Ann. About 240 laymen were conferred the golden and
silver medals For merits. These events took place on the occasions of the ecclesiastical and
state feasts, such as the Emperors birthday and the coronation day, as well as of the special

order days. But there also were some special cases. As a basic source we used the imperial
decrees about decorations, the texts of which had been published in the Ekaterinburg Diocese
News (Vedomosti). Weve left unnoticed the decorations issued by the Holy Synod as well as
those of the local importance only.

Archpriest Petr I. Mangilev, Andrey S. Runkevich. New Evidence Concerning the Biography
of His Majesty Varlaam (Denisov), Archbishop of Chernigov and Nezhin
Some hitherto unknown documents concerning the life and activities of His Majesty Varlaam
(Denisov) are published in the article. He was the inspector of the Vyatka Ecclesiastical
Seminary first, and later on the incumbent of the Ekaterinburg and of the Orenburg dioceses.
The publication includes: 1. The Instruction concerning the Behaviour of the Alumni of
the [Vyatka Ecclesiastical] Seminary and the Olders Surveillance on it which is preserved
within the manuscript collection of essays from the library of the Ekaterinburg Ecclesiastical
Seminary (inv. No. 57221) and three Varlaams letters to the abbess of the New Tikhvin
nunnery Magdalina (Neustroyeva) from a private archive. The instruction is interesting as a
reflection of the inner life of the ecclesiastical school during the 30-es of the 19th century. The
letters contain some curious details concerning the 19th-century diocese way of life, e.g., an
assessment of a candle reform draft. Some peculiarities of the letters are also important for
the history of the Ekaterinburg jewelry, as the Ekaterinburg jewelers Nikolay I. Lagutyaev and
Ivan S. Stebakov are mentioned there. The publication is supplied with a codicological survey
of the documents, as well as with the textological and real (historical) commentary.

Eugene I.Lyutko. A Priest in the modern world: in search of a mutual understanding
The dialogue with the contradictory and multifaceted modernity is a tangible challenge for
the Church. This gets an especially painful reflection in the life of a priest, who is called to
constantly interact with quite different people who often speak on a variety of languages, even
if they remain compatriots. The diversity of discourses, i.e., of socially conditioned semantic
systems, is a characteristic feature of the modern society. This fact should be considered both
in the development of a particular priests pastoral strategy and in the context of settling down
concrete tasks for the pastoral formation as a whole. In this paper, we propose a structure of

the discursive practice for a priest in the context of the challenges of Modernity. The concept
of the Incarnational pastoral care means finding a mutual understanding between a priest
and his flock on two levels, to wit, in the discourse of rationality and in the discourse of
emotion. The first one is the necessary basis for the interpersonal relations in the context
of the emotionally neutral situation. This category has become particularly relevant in
the context of the Modern time, when the rapid change of the scientific or socio-political
paradigms had begun, and the Church as the oldest social institution started to develop new
ways of how the eternal principles of Christianity should be expressed. The discourse of
emotion is a traditional category of the Church preaching. There are two types of emotional
modality: positive or negative. Throughout history, these two types have coloured the Church
teaching, without bringing it beyond the boundaries of the Orthodoxy. A priests attentiveness
towards both these categories of the discourse allows him to get through with the spiritual and
intellectual situation of the concrete person facing him, and makes the person hear and feel
the Good Tidings, with which the prelate addresses to him or her.

 The Clan of Scholars Will Never Perish The Correspondence from the Two Capitals
between Professor Nikolay N. Glubokovsky and Bishop Vasily (Bogdashevsky) from 1917
to 1921 (Introduction, Edition, and Commentary by Tatiana A.Bogdanova and Alexander
K.Klementiev)
The correspondence between the Professor Emeritus of the Saint Petersburg Ecclesiastical
Academy, the corresponding member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences Nikolay N.
Glubokovsky and bishop Vasily (Bogdashevsky), the rector of the Kiev Ecclesiastical Academy,
is published. It started from the 90-es of the 19th century. Besides the purely professional
interests (as both the persons taught at the chairs of the Holy Scripture of the New Testament),
it was a certain affinity of the correspondents views of the intra-academic and ecclesiastical life
that brought them closer to each other. When the Petrograd Ecclesiastical Academy is closed
in 1918, Nikolay N. Glubokovsky becomes a professor of the Department of the History of
the Western Asian Religions of the Petrograd University, professor of the Theological institute
and the archivist of the former Synodal Archive. The 49 letters published here cover the period
from the February 1, 1917, to the 15/28 November 1922 and were written from both Petrograd
and Kiev, while the two 1920 letters (nos. 14 & 16) were sent from Vologda, where Nikolay N.
Glubokovsky was on a mission. We find in the letters a rich data concerning the then position
of the Petrograd and Kiev Ecclesiastical Academies, together with some tragic particulars
on the different verges of life of the academic and ecclesiastical corporation, i.e., scientific,
pedagogical, and domestic ones. The letters also contain some valuable information about the
Petrograd Theological institute and other institutions where Nikolay N. Glubokovsky worked
then. Two letters were penned by Glubokovsky after his departure from Russia in July 1921.
The first of them was sent from Berlin where the professor spent several weeks trying hardly
to find a work and a shelter for himself, while the second one was written in Belgrade. With

the assistance of the Serbian Synod Nikolay N. Glubokovsky was appointed professor of the
Theological faculty of the Belgrade University.

One of the census books of the land possessions of the Vierkhoturie Saint Nicholas Monas
tery, dated back to 1678, which was composed by the Vierkhoturie boyar son I.K.Koptev
together with the small clerks (podiachie) D.Bobaylov and V.Rozhin, is published. Here
the scribes recorded not only the nearer lands of the monastery, but also those people
who settled on them next to the cloister, i.e., the peasants, polovniki (those who rented
land allotments for a part of the harvest), vkladchiki (lit. investors, a form of villains),
mercenaries. The further land possessions, including an allotment (zaimka) on the bank of
the Pyshma river, were recorded by another administrators. It is generally known that under
the tsar Fyodor Alexeyevich a general census of the monastic land possessions took place in
Muscovy. No wonder that under the mask of the regular documentary control there loomed
a quite different aim, to wit, a potential requisitioning to the State Treasury of redundant
arable lands and those grounds for which possession the ecclesiastical corporations within
the eyes of the State did not have any solid juridical foundations. This census included also
the Urals and Siberia where the possessions of the Tobolsk archbishop house and of all the
monasteries beyond the stone were situated.
In the 1678 census book wide and variegated evidence for the socio-economic history of the
Saint Nicholas monastery is contained. But so far this source was left almost unnoticed by
the scholars, unlike that of 1680. This latter book contained the census of the Vierkhoturie
district carried out by L.M.Poskochin, and the Nicholaite lands were included into the
general evidence concerning the district. But then the comparison of the evidence taken from
the two almost contemporary census books may provide a historian with unique possibilities
for a comparative analysis. This is why a full publication of the 1678 census books is so actual
a task. Here we publish only the first part of these, i.e., the census book by I.K.Koptev. The
text of the source is provided with a historical commentary. It is mostly concentrated on the
prosopography of the persons mentioned.
