Playersusedtothemodernoboewillfindreedsforthetwokeyedoboelargerandfreer
thanwhattheyareusedtothelargeboreandsimplefingeringsystemrequireaflexible
reedinordertoobtainchromaticnotesclearlyandintunebycrossfingering.Ifbb'and
f'aredifficult,probablythereedneedstobescrapedmore.Ifatfirstthetopg''ishigh
anddifficult(tendingtoscratch)itislikelythattoomuchreedisinthemouth.In
general,controlthereednearitstip,andtrytocushionthereedevenlyallaround,rather
thansqueezingfromtopandbottom.Firm,steadysupportfromthediaphragmis
essentialtoplayingintune.
Ifthecrossfingerednotes,especiallythelowf'',areconsistentlytoohigh,itisasignthat
theembouchureistootight.Oneexercisefordevelopingloosenessandflexibilityisto
playthesamepitchwithdifferentfingerings:Startingfromg''(laterfromthetop)and
workingdown,playeachnotefirstatthecorrectpitchandthenlipdowntothesemitone
below.Lowerthepitchsimplybyrelaxingthelipsandplayingnearerthetipofthereed.
Thenchangetothecorrect(ornormal)fingeringforthatnoteandrepeat.Thereedneeds
tobescrapedenoughtomakethisexercisepossible.Performingitsuccessfullywill
ensureagoodcommandoftuning,plustheabilitytoplaytrillswhichrequireunusual
fingerings.
Anexcellentmethodfortuningonesreedandforimprovingonesintonationgenerally
(andthatoftheoboeasitisplayedin)istosoundanoteononespitchmeterandplay
intervalswithit.Thismethodsimulatesplayinginanensembleandismorerealisticand
accuratethanmeteringeachnoteseparately.Theideaistosoundafewbasictonesd,
a,c,g,bbandplaythethird,fourthandfifthabovethem,addingthesixthand
otherintervalswithpractice,asyoulearnwhattolistenfor.Forexample,startby
soundingdonthepitchmeterandplayf#ga,increasingthebreathsupport
smoothlysothenotesconnectthedifferencetonesshouldbeheardasdgd.Theyare
makingafaintbassline,andeventhoughthedifferencetonescanswingwildlyoutof
tune,thankstoyouryearsofmusicalexperienceandmemoryyouwillrecognizewhere
toputthatbassline.Eachbassnotewillbethefundamentalofwhichthetwoupper
notesareharmonics.Thissystemisalsoamethodfortuningtheoboe:itensuresthat
rapidpassageswillfallintune,andonecanuseittoarriveatthebestcompromisefor
unequaltemperaments,inparticulartoachievesufficientlywidesemitones(listenfora
riseofagoodfourthinthedifferencetones.)
