Draw and describe the principle of thyristor-SCR

Thyristor are mainly used where high currents and voltages are involved such as to control
alternating currents. Thyristor-SCR has three states which is reverse blocking mode where the
voltage applied is blocked by a diode. Next is forward blocking mode where voltage is
applied in direction such that it conducts the voltage when the thyristor is not been triggered
and forward conducting mode which triggers the thyristor to conduct and will remain conduct
until forward current drops below a threshold value known as holding current .

2. Draw and describe briefly the characteristic of a thyristor-SCR

Thyristor-SCR has four semiconductor region which is p-n-p-n. the outer p is the anoded and
the outer n is the cathode. This is a two-way transistor. Thyristor can work in a way where the emitter
is connected to the anode it works as a P-N-P junction meanwhile when the emitter is connected to the
cathode it works as a N-P-N junction. Thyristor-SCR has four main characteristics which is latching
current, holding current, reverse current and forward breakover voltage. Latching current is the
minimum anode current require to keep the thyristor in on-state immediately after turning on while
holding current is to maintain its on-state. Reverse current is the reversed biased current and forward
breakover voltage is the maximum forward biased voltage to turn on the thyristor.
