Southeast Polk Junior High

Welcome!
This is an exploratory class to help develop your ability to take
care of yourself. You will have the opportunity to explore and practice
many skills that you need to survive and function as a responsible,
productive adult. We have a variety of topics to cover over the next
9 weeks. The skills you will learn in Family and Consumer Science will
not only benefit you in your everyday life, but also expose you to
many of the related career paths!
Units:
1. Personal Finance (1 week)- How to write a check/use debit care,
balancing a checkbook, setting financial goals, distinguishing
needs vs. wants.
2. Textiles (3 weeks)- Taking care of your clothes/laundry, basic
sewing techniques, operating a sewing machine, and completing
a basic sewing project.
3. Personal Wellness (1 week)- Taking care of your body,
establishing positive oral health, practicing safe skin care/sun
exposure, and developing good hygiene habits.
4. Foods & Nutrition (3 weeks)- Making healthy food choices,
practicing kitchen safety, establishing good manners, and
making your way through the kitchen as you gain an
understanding of cooking as applied science.
5. Child Development (1 week)- Gaining an understanding of how to
care for young children, appropriate behaviors when working
with youth, and make safe/informed decisions as a future parent
or caregiver.
Personal Finance

Learning Targets:
- Correctly write a check and accurately record the transaction in their
account register.
- Distinguish the difference between various needs & wants.
- Design a spending plan using the SMART Goal system

Assessment:
- Complete both Pre-Test & Post-Test to track progress
- Complete a SMART GOAL spending plan
Textiles
Learning Targets:
- How to care for their clothing (wash, dry, iron, remove stains, replace
a button.)
- Thread a sewing machine
- Understanding the machine basics
- Safely operate a sewing machine
Assessment:
- Complete an entire load of laundry from start to finish at home.
- Complete a sewing pre-test to track progress
- Complete a sewing project using the instructions given (pillow case.)
Personal Wellness
Learning Targets:
- Understanding the harmful effects of UV exposure and how to prevent
them.
- Exhibit positive hygiene behaviors including oral care, skin care, and
overall wellness.
Assessment:
- Complete both a Pre-Test & Post- Test to track progress
- Create a Public Service announcement to educate peers about
positive hygiene behaviors.
Food & Nutrition
Learning Targets:
- Exhibit industry standard safety and sanitation procedures with food
items and kitchen equipment.
- Display appropriate kitchen etiquette and table manners
- Understand basic nutrition principles, appropriate caloric intake, and
the effects of poor nutrition on the body.
Assessment:
- Complete a pre-post Measuring Lab to track progress.

- Complete an entire recipe from start to finish without any help from
the instructor.
- Complete a 2-day fitness analysis using the My Fitness Pal app and
reflect on experience.
- Design, prepare, and present a well-balanced meal for a family under
a specified budget.
Child Development
- Understand basic child-care techniques using materials from the
Babysitting Basic Online Curriculum

- Enroll in a CPR certification class taught at the school by a Red Cross
professional (30 minutes)

- Learn from guest speakers working in the child development field.
Assessment:
- Students will take a pre-post test regarding physical care of infants to
track progress.
- Complete a career exploration activity regarding a profession in the
child development field.
