Warm-up:
Time 7:18-7:28
Teacher greets students and reminds them of routine (receiving copy of EUs/EQs, reading and underlining
key terms). Students receive copy EUs/EQs
Focus:
Teacher reviews slide number 1 on large tablet
Teacher flips tablet to next page, reads SLOs

Transition: I will hand out a pre-test to find out what you know about science fiction already
Body/Process (What will students and teacher do/how and when?):
Activity I:
Diagnostic Pre-test

Ter Hand out pre-test and tell students to write names on test, and then turn it over. Explain to
students that they will not be graded except for completion for this assignment and to just try their best. If
they do not know an answer, leave it blank.
Sts Turn paper and start test. Quietly take pre-test. Asking questions when necessary
Teacher Walk around room to check progress.
Students When test complete, raise hand for test to be collected.

Transition: Okay, now that we know what we will learn about science fiction, lets get started on science
fiction. I will hand out an introduction to the genre.
Activity 2: Science Fiction introduction

Ter Hand out Science Fiction information packets. Give students 1 minute to read before speaking
Sts Review information
Teacher Tell students to highlight what they believe is important facts about science fiction
Students Highlight key information
Teacher Stop students at 8:10. Review what students should know for test (see handout)
Students Highlight important information shown by teacher.
Teacher Tell students to keep science fiction information in their binder for reference

Students will have highlighted the important information about science fiction. Students will learn that
science fiction can create awareness to social issues and tell stories about future technologies.

Transition: We know that the story will be about science fiction, now we will look at the writing style of the
story.
Activity 3: Figurative Language
Time 8:15-8:25
Teacher Hand out Figurative Language (simile and metaphor) Worksheets. Give students one minute
to read worksheets before speaking
Students Review worksheets.
Teacher Read page one and directions (see packet). Tell students to work independently and (if the
students have more than 10 minutes) the worksheets will be collected at the end of class for a grade.
Students Independently complete worksheets.
Transition: I will now hand out your homework for the week, which contains both science fiction and
figurative language
Activity 4: Hand out Homework
Time 8:15-8:25
Teacher: Hand out Simile and Metaphor homework packet and create-your-own world project
description. Allow students 2 minutes to read through the two homework packets. Display expectations on
SmartBoard as well.
Students Review Packets
Teacher Explain in detail what is expected of students (see description, rubric and packet). For
create-your-own-world project, students will have two options. Option 1 is to write a five paragraph essay
about their world. The essay will be typed and address all questions on description sheet. This essay will be
due on day 5. The whole project will be done at home.
Students Ask questions relating to Option 1.
Teacher Tell students that Option 2 is to create a map of their world. Students will need to attach a
paragraph describing the problem in their world, characters in their world, places in their world and other
fictional aspects of their world. In addition, students will write a 10-line national anthem for their world. It will
be written like a song or poem. Students will hand in a map, a paragraph description, and a national anthem.
Students Ask questions relating to Option 2.
Teacher Review simile and metaphor homework packet. Read page 1 and review directions with
students (see packet). Remind students that they will be able to ask questions throughout the week if
students have any while working on their project.

Closure:
Pull up SLOs on tablet

Ask the EQs on exit ticket question: What are the characteristics of science fiction? and place it in the
appropriate box. Once each student turns in exit ticket question in appropriate box, review EQ and EUs on
tablet.
