The center of the system is the microprocessor printed circuit board, A3, which controls all system operations including fron panel interface, MA selection, KVP control, timing functions, and built-in dlagnostics. Turning the system on using CB-1 applies power to transformer, TI. TL supplies AC voltage to the microprocessor which 1s used to generate nC voltages of +5, 424, #15 and -15, in addition to all the other AC voltages needed tn che unit. In normal operation, the microprocessor is operating tn an executive Program aode. It scans the front panel, Ad and AS, to see if any buttons are depressed If none are depressed the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) and Front Panel LED's are updated. The microprocessor repetitively performs this routine until a key is pressed. Once it senses a key, it switches over to the Program called for by that key. When that program 1a finished, the aleroprocessor returns to the executive routine scanning the front panel switches, and updating the front panel. From the executive program several different functions can be selected by depressing front panel keys. These will be described below: 1. Bucky selection: Pushing any of the three bucky keys selects “NON-BUCKY", “BUCKY 1” or “BUCKY 2" and lights the appropriate LED. ve Old aAxona < $5 T uamod (wy) LANDY ne AIddns 6 DUA Of i av ADGA OF wo1ou{so—} a8 lsovauaini cece (i290) | an-vove saviay A od ay) >| (ev houinos vui<——] vossavouaouony aa (Sv"PV) T3NV¥d LNOUd WVYDVIG 4001 HOLVUIND ,SpurnaNos “1O- Section II cM 425 2.1 cont. 2. Setting Technique Factors: Depressing any “Control” key increases or decreases the corresponding technique fators. 3. The Compu-mAs Syste is unique, in that increasing or decreasing ats will automatically reoult {n the next available as selection to be used, ‘even if both aA and time change. The system will also select the shortest time available to achieve an aAs selection. One exception would be for Fine detail studies, when szall focal spot is used. If the small focal spot is selected above 4 gAs using the aA “Control”, then COMPU-mAs will saintain the soali focal spot selections only. 4, Prep: Depressing the “PREP” button starts the rotor and sete the BA for the x-ray tube. The rotor rune for approxisately 1 1/2 seconds at 220 VAC at which time It switches to 50 VAC. During the rotor starting tine, the DOOR, SCR, PBL, and rotor are checked. At about 1 second after pushing rotor, the line voltage is measured and the aicroprocessor selects the necessary KP relays. The output voltage which will go to the high voltage transformer 1s then checked against the calibration data. If all 1s ok then the “PREP” LED fe lite 5. XoRay: When "X-RAY" 1s pushed, the PREP cycle is first completed. The backup contactor, Kl, 1s turned on and power is applied to the bucky if a bucky has been selected. The DOOR, PBL and SCR are once again checked and if all is 0.K., x-ray ie begun. All switching is done through the solid state control, SCR. The alcroprocessor controls all timing by monitoring the zero crossings of the AC line. At each zero crossing, the SCR 4a cursed oa for one pulse for the duration of the exposure. The system is also in a fati-safe uode since the aictoprocessor 1s monitoring its {nternal crystal reference. If something should fail in the zero crossing sensors, the timer will shut off at the end of the aext pulse. “ue Section II cM 425 2eL conte 6. Calibrator Depressing “CAL” key on the rear of the front panel (See Fig. 4.7) initiates the calibration program. A full description of the calibration of the unit appears in Section IV. 7. Test: Depressing the “TEST” key on the rear of the front panel, displays a test menu. Making a selection initiates the indicated test sequence. The memory test runs until power is curned off continually testing EEPROM, EPROM and RAM. ‘The output KVP is selected by KV relays K2 through KL7 in conjunction with the auto transformer, Tl. The relays select output taps which then add or subtract voltage from 220 volts. This voltage appears across P and PC which 1s the primary voltage for the high voltage transformer. 2.2 FRONT PANEL DESCRIPTION The front panel of the CH 425 Control contains all of the switches and displays which interface the operator to the microprocessor. The keys are divided among two boards. The top board 208061, A4, contains the Liquid erystal display . This connects to the 208042 board, AS, front panel PC Board which contains the rest of the front panel controls and LED's. ‘The microprocessor scans the front panel keys a9 a row and coluan matrix. There are four rows and four columns of switches. The row ts selected by a three-bit code applied to Pins 1, 26 3 of UL. A code of 0 selects the cop row of suitches (refer co Figure 6.2) by putting a low level on Ul ~ Pin 15. The microprocessor looks at the column outputs JI - Pin 6, 7, 8&9 for a low level. A low level on any of these four pins would indicate chat a switch fa that column is depressed. If all of the coluan outputs are high, the aleroprocessor would then send a code of 1 to Ul which would apply a low level to Ul - Pin 14 selecting the second row of awitches. Again, the microprocessor Looks at the column outputs for a low level. This is repeated uatil all rows of the switches are scanned. -12- Section II cM 425 I£ any column output ts sensed low, the aicroprocessor terminates scanning and returns to the executive program with the tnformation as to which key is selected. The LED's are controlled by a two-wire sequence. JL ~ Pin 10 is a clock input to @ 16-bit shift register consisting of U3 & U4, Whenever this clock signal goes high, the Logic level on J ~ Pin 5 is shifted into the input co the shift register U3 - Pin 2. Updating the LED's consist of 16 clock pulses shifting in 16 bits of data indfeating which of the LED's are on and which are off. The shift register clock signal is also connected to US ~ Pin 1 & 2. This 18 the input to a one~shot which drives transistor Ql which blanks the LeD's during the time that the shift register is being updated. It is triggered on the first update clock pulse and turns off all LED's for the duration of the update. There 1s one other output line from the front panel which is JL ~ Pin 11. This indicates the closure of the X-RAY witch. This is used for che “Dead Man” switch function of the X-RAY key, Whenever the X-RAY key 1s released, this signal goes high opening the backup contactor. In normal operation, the SCR is off before X-RAY is released. ae Section IT cy 425 2.3 MICROPROCESSOR 208043 (a3) ‘The aleroprocessor controls all functions of the CONPU-aAs Systen as well as supplying 5 volt, 24 volt and +/-15 volt to all other ctreultry (Figure 6.5). 8 VAC ts applied to JI - Pin 10 & 11 which connects to bridze rectifier consisting of CRI-4, The output of the bridge rectifier ts fLltered by Cl and connected to a 5 volt regulator U22, The output of U22 ts further fLltered by C3 and provides 5 volts for the whole system. The voltage on Jl - Pin 10 & 11 ts applied to CRS & 6 which im turn, turn on 03 and 04 generating square waves tn phase with both phases of the power line. These two signals, Phase 1 & 2, are connected to U7 - Pin 14 & 15 and used by the microprocessor for timing functions. 24 VAC 4s applied to JL ~ Pin 5 & 6 and connected to a bridge formed by (R912 whose output passes through Fuse Fl. The voltage at this point te filtered by C8 & 9 and connects to a 24 vole regulator U23. The output of U23, supplies 24 VDC to the syste 15 VOC. The voltage at JI ~ Pin § goes through a level shifter consisting of This voltage 1s applied to VRI which generates R13, CRLG and C13 and C14 generating a negative voltage which io applied to VR2 which generates -15 VDC. UL is an &bit microprocessor. C5, C6 and Yl connect to the microprocessor forming a 3.58 Miz clock. This clock is divided by four and appears at Ul - Pin 34 as a 2-phase system clock, £ & 0, These two signals control all data transfer timing. The afcroprocessor communicates with the other circuits on the board through an address bus Ul - Pins 8-23 and a data bus Ul - Pins 24-31. The sicroprocessor {s started by a reset circuit consisting of RLO, CR7 and C27. This circuit holds Ul - Pin 37 low after power is applied for about a 1/4 second enabling all power supplies to achieve a stabilized voltage before the aicroprocessor starts running its program. -14- Section II GH 425 2.3 cont. ‘The four high address Lines A12-15 are connected to the address decoder, Us. This chip selects the appropriate PIA, D/A, EEPROM, EPROM, LCD or RAM chips that the mieroprocessor needs to address. For instance, if the Bicroprocessor 1s going to write data into U4 (RAM), Al2-15 will be at a low level and the address of the location in RAM will appear on the address lines AQw10. US - Pin 15 will be a low level enabling U4. At this time, che microprocessor will set the date {t wants to write on to the data bus and will pull UL ~ Pin 32 (READ/WRITE) low. This line together with the F clock signal generate a write enable pulse on U1l ~ Pin 11 which writes the data into RAY at the address specified on the address bus. The RAM, US, is a random access menory used by the microprocessor for all calculations. It contains 2,048 8-bit words. The EPROM, U2, 1s a eraseable programmable read only memory consisting of 32,768 G-bit words which contain all of the program instructions for the operation of the PAT as well as the tube limits for the particular x-ray cube being used. Therefore, whenever changing this cireuit board, be sure that the replacement board has an EPROM which has been programmed for the same x-ray tube or use the EPROM from the board being replaced. ‘The EEPROM, U3, 18 am electrically eraseable progrannable read only memory which {9 used by the system for all storage of AutoTech technique data and calibration data, This circuit can be written to by the aleroprocesaor bur unlike the RAM will not be erased when power 1s turned off. UIS {a a voltage seasing circuit which inhibits inadvertent writing to the EEPROM during power oa and power off. -15- Section II cy 425 2.3 cont. PIA's, US-U7, are peripheral interface adaptors which are used to connect the microprocessor to the rest of the system. US which is the front panel interface (EPI) connects to the front panel and 1s used for scanning the keys and updating the LED's. It also interfaces to the thickness aeasuring system and sets PREP. U6 interfaces to the digital-to-analog convertors and controls the KVP relays. U7 1s used to control the MA selection and interfaces to the interface board for all signals {nvolving interlocks, rotor, bucky and timing functions. 20, U21 and U2% form 2 successive approximation digttal-to-analog convertor. CR is a zener diode reference which supplies 6.2 volts through RLS to op amp U20, R17 is used to adjust the output of U20 - Pin 14 to -10.2 VC which is the reference for the digital-to nalog convertor U24, VTEST J6 = Pin 17 from the interface board is applied to voltage divider R18 & 19 and fLltered by C26. This is buffered by U21-D and applied to U24~ Pin 9. The aicroprocessor controls U24 through the data bus successively trying different codes until the reference voltage on U24 - Pin 8 equals the voltage on U24 - Pin 9. This code ts then used by the aicroprocessor to calculate the AC voltage at the input to 72 om the interface board. D/A-2, U25 19 an optional digital-to-analog convertor which is needed when an auxillary plece of equipaent {s used with the CM 425 requiring an analog voltage proportional to KVP, When Ul2 and U25 are inserted, a voltage on J7 ~ Pin 8 will vary from 0 to 10 volts as the KVP 1s changed from the lowest KVP to the highest KVP. The front panel LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is connected to the aicroprocessor through the data bus. Timing for the LCD data transfer ts controlled by the Q clock signal gated in ULé with the LCD enable signal froa U8 - Pin 9 and the read/write line. The address line 40 controls which register {a the LCD data 1s written to or read from. The vertical viewing angle of the LCD can be controlled by adjusting R33 which applies a blas voltage to J2 ~ Pin 4. -16- Section II cMé25 2.3 cont. U16 and UL7 driver IC's are used to control the KVP relays through J5. The sequence of operation ts such that US sets up the inputs to U16 & 17. When the outputs have settled, U6 - Pin 9 goes high indicating that we are ready to apply power to the KVP relays. This signal is connected to driver IC, U10 causing 110 - Pin 13 to go low turning on Ol applying 24 volts to JS - Pins 18-20 which actually turns on the KVP relays. In order to take an x-ray exposure, in addition to applying pulses to the SCR chrough J6 - Pin 16, the back-up contactor has to be turned on. This is done by US - Pin 13 going high causing the output of the driver U10 - Pin 17 to go low. If at the same tine Q2 is on, then the back-up contactor ts enabled. Q2 ts turned on by J3 - Pin 11 being low indicating that the x-ray switch 1s held down causing U13 ~ Pin 13 to be low, U10 - Pin 4 to be high and UL0 - Pin 15 to be low. ~17- Seetion II M425 2.4 MA CONTROL BOARD 208033, A7 ‘The MA control board selects which of seven MA stations are being used on command from the microprocessor. The MA stations are selected by the closure of any of relays K2 through KA (refer to figure 6.7). This connects the appropriate tab on the space charge resistor R4 to the appropriate tap on the large or small fLlament adjust resistors R2 or R3. Relay Kl applies voltage to the filament coomon. Ki 4s controlled by the PREP signal on J3. In normal operation the PREP signal and che tube select signal are anded together in U3 and applied to U4 = Pin B. Us tsa driver IC consisting of eight identical drivers. When Ué = Pin 8 goes high, U4 - Pin 11 goes low which applies 24 volts across KL turning 1t on. The MA select relays X2 through KB are controlled by a 2bit code on J3 ~ Pins 5, 6 & 7. A code 0 leaves all relays off. Codes 1 through 7 turn on Relays K2 through K8 reapectively. This is accomplished by the J+bit code being applied to Ul - Pina 1, 2, & 3. UL 4s a decoder chip which has all outputs at a high level except for the one selected. For instance, if the alcroprocessor wants to select K4, it applies Code 3 to UL which causes U1 ~ Pin 12 co go low which causes U2 - Pin 6 to go high which causes U4 - Pin 13 to go low which turns on Ké. In tl manner, all of the MA stations can be selected. “18 Section If cMé2s 2.5 INTERFACE BOARD 208034 (41) The interface board (Fig. 6.9) connects the mferoprocessor to all of the high voltage circuits as vell as the PBL (Positive Beam Liattation) and door interlock circuits. These circuits tnelude the rotor and bucky controls. TB1 - Pins 1 & 2 are connected through the door interlock normally closed circuits. When this path ts broken, Jl - Pin 6 (DOOR), which ts normally low, goes high indicating to the microprocessor that the door is open. TB1 - Pins 3 & 4 are connected to the collimator normally closed contacts. If this circuit is broken because the collimator is not in a PAL condition, Jl ~ Pin 8 (PBL) which 1s normally low, goes high indicating to the alcroprocesgor that PBL is not satisfied. JL ~ Pin 12 and J1 ~ Pin 13 control which bucky {s enabled. If JL ~ Pin 12 (BUCKY 1) 4s high, U3 - Pin 2 goes high causing U3 ~ Bin 17 to go low turning on Relay K2 and applying 120 volts AC to J3 - Pin 5 which turns on Bucky 1. Similarly, JL - Pin 13 (BUCKY 2) urna on K3, which applies 120 volts AC to J3 - Pin 3 enabling Bucky 2. When che bucky is in position for an x-ray to begin, the bucky applies 120 volts AC to J3- Pin 6, This voltage is tape ralaing UL0 - Pin 4 toa high level and applies the high level to Ji ~ Pin 1é (BUCKYRDY). This tells the afcroprocessor to start an exposure. sed across R31, R45, CR22 and photocoupler U10. U10 then turns on The aicroprocessor then applies a square wave to JL - Pin 16. Each transition of the square wave froa high to low or low to high corresponds to an x-ray pulse being generated. This square wave {s applied to Ol which in turn controls driver transistors Q2 & 03 generating a square wave on the input co transformer 12 - Pin 1. T2 is a pulse transformer that turns on the silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) which in turn controls the pulses to the high voltage transformer. 19- Section IT cy425 2.5 cont. ‘The bridge rectifier consisting of diodes CRI6-19 ts monitoring a possible voltage generated by a leaky SCR. If such a voltage 1s sensed, optocoupler, US ts turned on applying a low level to Jl - Pin 7 (ScR). This signal 18 sensed by the aicroprocessor and would inhibit an exposure and indicates “SCR?” on the LCD. J2- Pin Land J2 ~ Pin 2 are connected across M1 and M2 on the high voltage transformer. This is a current sense signal sensing the current in the x-ray tube. Any current flowing through the x-ray tube passes through R2? and U4, When a current flows, U4 turns on applying a low level to JL - Pin 5 C@AYON). This indtcates to the microprocessor that current {s flowing through the x-ray tube. If no current {s sensed by this circuit during an xray exposure, an indication ("NO MA ?) te made on the LCD. CRIJ-14 are used to limit the voltage across U4. Another circuit on this board 1s used to measure the 220 VAC for automatic line compensation and the voltage at Pé which ts the voltage into the SCR prior to exposure. These two voltages are selected by Kl which is driven by U3 and controlled by the aieroprocessor by JL - Pin 19 (MUX). The voltage to be measured appears across the primary Tl - Pin 1 & 4, The output of Tl is applied to bridge rectifier consisting of CR3-6. The output of the bridge 19 filtered by C8, RII is used to adjust the gain of this circuit such that when we measure 220 VAC, 220 volts is indicated on the LCD. The output of this circuit ts on JL ~ Pin 17 (VTEST) and Jl - Pin 18 analog ground. The rest of the circuitry on the interface board is involved with the x-ray tube rotor control. At the beginning of the PREP eycle, JI - Pin 10 (PREP) and JL - Pin 15 (R220) are both high. ~20- Section IE cH425 2.5 cont. When R220 goes high the microprocessor 1s telling the rotor starter efrcuit to go into the high speed start mode (220 VAC applied to the rotor) causing U3 - Pin 12 to go low causing U3 - Pin 8 to be low. R19 and C10 form a 2second time delay such that U3 - Pin 8 would go high after 2 seconds even 41£ R220 remained high. At the start of PREP, U3 - Pin & being low causes 113 - Pin 14 to be low turning on optocoupler U9 and also keeping U3 - Pin 4 low and optocoupler U8 off. U9 being low turns on its triac closing the circuit between U9 - Pin 4 & 6 which turns on triae 05 applying 220 VAC to J3 - Pin 10 which is the rotor common line. The rotor is connected between J3 - Pin 10 and J3- Pin 8&9. Rotor current flows through R28-30 to the 0 volt AC return, R28 senses the current in the phase shife winding and R29 and R30 senses the current in the main winding. I£ the rotor 1s working, the voltage across these current sense resisitors appears on CR21 and CR20 which detects the voltage and turns on optocouplers U6 and U7. If both of these currents are good, then Q4 turns on forcing a low level on JI - Pin 9 (ROTOR). TE either of these currents ie not present, JL - Pin 9 goes high indicating to the microprocessor that there 1s no rotor current and prevents an exposure. After 1 1/2 seconds, the mteroprocessor will pull R220 low indteating that it is time to apply 50 VAC to the rotor which 1a the run condition. vhen R220 goes low U3 - Pin 12 goes high, U3 - Pin 11 goes low and U3 - Pin 14 goes high turning off U9. When U9 turns off, Q5 turns off and chere ts no voltage applied to the rotor. R13, R14 and C9 forma tine delay of about 1/4 second after which time U3 ~ Pin 4 goes high causing U3 ~ Pin 15 to go low causing 118 to tura oa, U8 turning on turas on triac 06 applying $0 VAC to the rotor. This condition {s sustained until the operator releases PREP and XRAY causing PREP to go low at which point triac Q6 turas off. =21- Section IT cMa25 2.6 30 WDC POWER SUPPLY 200113 (A6) Ths PC Board supplies 30 VDC for auxillary equipment such as electric locks (Fig. 6.11).
