A good team creates its own luck...and the Kolts

definitely did that today! Facing up to an outstanding
North Sydney side, the Kolts produced a display of grit
and determination that got them the result despite not
playing their best football.
This team has consistently shown an ability to do the hard
work, knowing the rewards will come over 90 minutes.....today
stretching the time limit to include extra time and penalties.
The heat played its part in the warm up, with the walk up and
down the hill proving good enough for most (Vic made sure he
got the fingers stretched and even did the hammy stretch
reaching down to get another ciggy from his bag).
The speed and fitness of North Sydney was dicult for the
first.....120 minutes! These lads were young (younger than us!)
and know how to play. Kellyville though were clever during the
first half, stretching the time in possession and working
overtime to win the ball back when it was lost. The work of
Jaime, Alex and Minol throughout the match in the middle
was inspirational.
Dame and Fewelly showed how to plug the centre and
somehow found the run to play out from the back time and
again -SUPERB. Adam, Stonie and Noons chasing all day and
working o the centre pair.
After ten minutes a switched ball from the left found the
dangerous NS right winger who finished from just inside the
area - unstoppable. 1-0 down, but hanging in for the battle.
The game was willing and the North Sydney lads didnt pull
out of any challenges....and neither did the Kolts. Eventually
five minutes from the break, the Kolts had a mini victory when
the NS right back dived in with a challenge that earnt him a
yellow card and then his carry on earnt him a second yellow o he went.
The break saw the Kolts come out and push forward (in
defence and attack) and dominate the early exchanges. A
simple one-two between Doz and Vic saw the silky feet of the
little italian dazzle the defenders who dived in and brought
him down. Vic duly converting the penalty.
An immediate break down the left from NS saw Nolan make a
quality save diving full length to knock it around the post.
NS had a couple of running corners...on the second, a near
post flick on finding the way to the man at the back post to
finish and the Kolts were down again.
Ten minutes later and a defensive slip saw them sneak in a
third and to the crowd the game was gone. 3-1 down and
twenty remaining.

Nolan (& Dame/Fewelly)

The Kolts then had to dig deep...and it started from Nolan as

he made a couple of point blank saves as he refused to let the
tiring NS get out of reach (at least we thought they might tire
eventually?!). The linesman helping with one chance by letting
one of them run through 5 yards oside - Nolan making a one
on one save charging o his line - outstanding!
With time ticking down and six minutes remaining, the eort
of the entire squad (and the never quit attitude) was rewarded
as Dan looked up as he picked up the ball on the right and cut
in....seeing the run of someone across the top of the box and
played in down the right. Someone rounding the ball and from
an acute angle put his right foot shot across the keeper and in
at the far post.
Soon after the kick o and Vic played a ball from deep to
Bunny up front....Bunny knowing that someone was making the
run in o the touchline played first time into the hole. Someone
picking up the ball 30 out and charged into the box...a quick
look inside saw Doz busting a gut with a great run to get in
front of his man....but someone saw the chance for goal as the
keeper came o his line....and went for it - driving a shot to the
left of the keeper into the roof of the net. The celebrations
with the guy walking past were....weird, but nobody cared and
the Kolts were now pushing for a winner.
A minute or two were left and the pressure from the Kolts was
tremendous...Naya and Rich leading the way in pushing and
closing down.
As it went to extra time and golden goal, the Kolts wanted the
goal and went for it. A ball pinched by Doz saw him run in on
the keeper and then lay a square ball to Dan. Dans shot hitting
the crossbar as his defender managed to dive in. The second
half saw another cross bar when a shot rebounded back out to
Adam who hit a great shot past the advancing keeper...but
watched as it rose just enough to cannon back o the crossbar.
A chance to NS after Nolan had been smashed saw him save
from 8 yards....he must have really wanted it to get to pens so
another chapter could be written!
The pens saw a team left on the field that know how to work a
penalty shootout. Clear shots and dominating the head games.
The banter and cheering saw NS quiet and eventually their
pens showed they lacked the conviction. Alex finished in style
and set the tone, Nolan made a tremendous save to his right
o their third pen to keep us in it. Vic, Doz and Adam made
the keeper look no chance and Fewelly hit the last pen (so he
really hit the match winner!) with the ball hitting the net
before the keeper knew what happened...and then Nolan saved
(of course) their sixth pen as the Kolts looked unbeatable!
Move on to next week...
