1 Introduction
1.1 About WCDMA BTS site commissioning
ThisdocumentdescribeshowtocommissionFlexiLiteWCDMABTSsitesusingthe
CommissioningwizardintheBTSSiteManagersoftware.
Thisdocumentprovidesinstructionsonhowtoproceedwithmanualcommissioning
whenthereisnocommissioningfileavailable,fortemplatecommissioningandplanned
commissioningwithacommissioningfile,andforreconfigurationofthealready
commissionedsite.Inadditiontherearechaptersdescribingtestingofthesiteafter
commissioning.
NokiaSiemensNetworksrecommendsthattheuserhastherelevantknowledgeofbase
stationsystemsandequipment.Paycarefulattentiontoallwarningsandcautions.
Theseinstructionsarebasedontheassumptionthattheuserknowshowtousebasic
computersoftware.Atleastthefollowingactionsareneeded:installingSW,uninstalling
SWandchangingtheIPaddressinthePC.

NOTICE:Onlyproperlytrainedandauthorisedpersonnelmayperform
installation,commissioning,ormaintenanceoperationsonany
NokiaSiemensNetworksbasetransceiverstation(BTS).

1.2 Introduction to WCDMA BTS site commissioning


Generic commissioning tasks
Commissioningisasequenceoftasks,suchasvisualchecksandinspections,
parameterandSWconfigurations,testsandreporting,toensurethatthestand-alone
equipmentinquestionhasbeenproperlyinstalled,hasnofaultymodulesandisready
forintegration.
ThegenericcommissioningstepscanbeseeninthefollowingCommissioningoverview
figure.Thedetailsofeachstepdependontheequipmentandversioninquestionand
canbefoundintherelevantdocumentation.

TheautoconnectionprocedurestartsautomaticallywhentheBTSisstartingup
andinitializestransportconnectionstotheuppernetworkelements.Duringthe
autoconnectionprocedure,thetransportpartforonlinechangesisdisabled.
Autoconnectionprocedureisstoppedwhenafullconfigurationfileissenttothe
BTSandactivated

Visual checks and inspection


ThefirstpartofthevisualcheckisdonebeforepoweringontheBTSsiteatthepower
system.WhenallisproventobeOK,the'Poweron'checkisdoneandtheLEDstatusis
verified.Theequipmentischeckedvisuallytoseethattherearenofatalinstallation
errors,whichmightleadtoequipmentdamageduringthepoweron.
Thefollowingitemsarechecked:

thegrounding
powercablingandsupplyvoltage
othercablesandfibres
LEDstatusduringpowerup
TX/RX/antennaconnectortorquecheck

Local SW download
Thisstepcontainsalltheactionsrequiredtoupdateand/ordownloadSWtothe
equipmentortothePCformanagingtheequipmentatthesite.Theexactorderinthe
stepsequenceisequipment-specificandthusmighttakeplaceaftersomeselftests.

Parameter setup
Thiscontainsalltheactionsrequiredtosetuptheparametersforcommissioningandfor
integration.Parametersmightincludesoftwareparametersfedinmanuallyorasafile.
Theequipmentspecificproductdocumentationdescribesthedetails.Someofthe
parametersneedtobegivenduringtheteststep.
Notethatwhenaparameterisnotmentionedinacommissioninginstruction,the
parametershouldbeleftatitsdefaultvalueeventhoughitmightbepossibletochange
it.

Commissioning tests
Thiscontainsthekeyteststhatneedtobecarriedouttoensurethebasicfunctionalityof
theequipmentinquestion.Someofthetestsareactivatedautomatically,someofthem
arerunasapartoftheCommissioningwizardandsomemightneedtobeactivated
separately.Someofthetestsareoptionalandarerunfordiagnosticpurposesifthereis
areasontosuspectthefunctionality.Typicaltestsandmeasurements:

sitetests
sitesupportsystemalarmsshownattheBTS
RFmaxpowermeasurement(optionaltest)

Someofthefunctionaltestsneedmoreparametersthanareavailableduringthe
commissioningandthuscanberunonlyafterthenetworkelementhasbeenintegrated
anditisabletogettherestoftheparametersfromtheRNC.

Troubleshooting
Thepurposeoftroubleshootingistorectifytheproblemsfoundbyanalysingthetest
resultsandperhapsrunningsomefurtherteststoidentifythecauseoftheproblem.
Informationabouttroubleshootinghintsandoptionaltestscanbefoundintheequipment
specificdocumentation.Toavoiddoublework,itisessentialtobeawareofthecurrent

packagesneedtobestudiedfromtimetotimeforlatestinformationaboutknown
problemsandwork-aroundsolutions.
BasedontheexperienceandHWrepairstatisticsaboutthecauseofthefaultsone
majorgroupis'nofaultfound'.Tominimizeunnecessaryshipping,sparewaitingand'no
faultfound'reports,itisessentialtodouble-checkthesuspectedmoduleonemoretime
beforesendingittorepair.
Oncethemoduleissuspectedandthereplacementseemstorectifytheproblem,the
originalsuspectedmoduleneedstobetriedoncemore.Inmanycasestheactualreason
whichrectifiedtheproblemispoweroff/on-resetorplugoff/pushinreset.
Whenthemoduleisreallysuspectedorprovenfaulty,theappropriateerrorreport
attachedwithpossiblelogortestreportfilesisfilled.Thefollowinginformationneedsto
beclearlyavailableinthereport:

Bar code reading and site inventory


Tobeabletotraceagivenmodulebasedontheserialnumberortheversionnumber,it
isimportanttocollectandkeeptheinformationaboutthemoduleversionandserial
numbersuptodate.ThemostadvancedmodulesandtheirSWversionssupportthe
electronicserialandversionnumberdetectionandrecording.Somelessadvancedand
passivemodulesdonotnecessarilyhavethisfeatureandthosemodulesneedtobe
scanned.MostofthemodulesinstalledontheBTShaveasetofextraserialandversion
numberlabels,whichmustbeattachedtotheBTScabinetdoororintheinventoryform
inthesitefolderduringtheinstallation.Duringthebarcodereadingalsotheselabels
needtobescanned.

Reporting
Themostimportantpartofthecommissioningisthereporting.Withoutrelevantreports
theequipmentcanbeconsiderednotcommissioned.Thepurposeofreportingistokeep
trackofthelateststatusoftheequipmentandtheworkdone.Somenewequipment
supportsfeatureswherethereportsareautomaticallyupdatedtothemaindatabasein
theNetActsystem,someneedafewmanualsteps,andsomereportsneedtobe
saved/printedmanually.Typicalreportsare:

2 Installing BTS Site Manager


Purpose
FollowtheseinstructionstoinstallBTSSiteManagersoftwaretoyourPC.
Before you start
YoushouldbefamiliarwithinstallingsoftwaretoyourPCandmanagingfilesinit.
TosetupandinstalltheBTSSiteManager,youneedtohaveanInternetconnection
availabletodownloadtheBTSSiteManagerinstallationfilefromNokiaOnlineServices
(NOLS).Theinstallationfilecanalsobedeliveredonaremovablemedia(CD-ROM,for
example).
Notethatyouwillneedadministratorrightsonyouroperatingsysteminordertobegin
theinstallation.

If you have BTS Site Manager running on your PC, close it before starting the
installation.

Double-click the file to start the installation.

DefinethelocationwheretoinstalltheBTSSiteManager.Ifyouhaveearlier
versionsoftheBTSSiteManageronyourPC,youneedtoremovetheinstalled

ItisnotrequiredtoremoveearlierversionsoftheBTSSiteManagerwhenanew
versionisinstalled.ThecorrectBTSSiteManagerversionisselectedautomatically
whentheconnectiontotheBTSisestablished.
IftheinstallationoftheBTSManagerisunsuccessful,usetheClean Installation
optiontoremoveallBTSSiteManagerversionsfromyourPCandstartthe
