Results of school survey presented

at open forum

The results of Kohler School

Districts Strategic Communication Plan survey were presented to
about 45 in attendance at an open
forum at the school on January 11.
The survey, which was conducted in November/December by
School Perceptions, LLC sought
input toward helping the district
develop a communications plan
that meets the needs and priorities
of the community.

The survey results showed

that overall, respondents were
very satisfied with the District.

showed that 72% of parents rated
the Districts communication as
either very or somewhat effec-

to announce a new collective effort to address labor shortages.
Thousands of positions are currently available, with hundreds
more expected to be added in the
next few months. Some are newly created positions, while others
will open through retirements.
From August 2011 through
August 2015 Sheboygan County
saw the strongest job growth (7.3
percent) of any county in eastern
Wisconsin and nearly double the
statewide rate, according to Dane
Checolinski, director of the Sheboygan County Economic Development Corporation (SCEDC).
There are roughly 2,400 open positions throughout the community,
compared to the estimated 2,069
people classified as unemployed.
If the trend continues, Sheboygan
County will add another 1,000
jobs in 2016.
Steve Cassady, vice president
of supply chain and operations at
Kohler Co., said the firm currently
has 337 new full-time, year-round
job openings, with only 21 of the
openings being hourly factory
work. Almost three-quarters of
the openings are for administrative and professional positions in
areas such as engineering, sales,
logistics, information technology, and marketing and finance. If
retirements are included, Kohler

Co. has 500 openings. Throw in

seasonal positions, and the total
number of available openings at
Kohler Co. comes out to roughly
850.
Plymouth-based
Sargento
Foods Inc. currently has 80 positions open, and 300 are expected
to be added in 2016 due to retirements. Aurora Health Care, which
employs 1,700 in Sheboygan
County, said it hires 100-150 yearly, including recruitment of ten
doctors per year. Bemis Manufacturing Company, which employs
1,500, also expects many positions opening due to retirements.
If youre underemployed or
stuck in a cycle of temporary
work, Sheboygan County firms
have full-time careers that offer
opportunity for advancement.
Only five percent of Sheboygan
County job postings are for temporary or seasonal workers, said
Checolinski. Though more than
35 percent of the areas job offerings require a four-year degree,
many companies offer entry level
jobs covering all aspects of training investment and compensation
levels for full-time employment
that can pay as much as $35,000
per year.
The main roadblock to attracting new talent to Sheboygan
County (and Wisconsin in general) cited by business leaders is
the stigma attached to the state
as being too rural and too cold.

people stop when the word Wisconsin is said. And thats really
unfortunate.
Based on many online comments on Milwaukee news websites, many people outside of
Sheboygan associate the area with
quirky news headlines and a provincialism. One Milwaukee radio
station used to broadcast a regular
feature poking fun at Sheboygan.
But many who finally visit Sheboygan County often leave with a
different impression. Last fall, for
example, Kevin Struck, Growth
Management Educator for Sheboygan Countys UW-Extension,
hosted a group of community planners from northeastern Wisconsin.
Many in the group were pleasantly surprised by the redevelopment
along the riverfront and the lake.
I never wouldve guessed it was
so nice down there, one of the

planners said. This isnt the way

I imagined Sheboygan, said another.
Last year the UW-Extension
held a secret shopper type program where a small group of
young professionals from Kenosha visited Sheboygan, Kohler
and Sheboygan Falls to gauge
first impressions of the area. (Sheboygan professionals also visited
Kenosha for the same purpose).
Most respondents from Kenosha
said they would consider working
or starting a business in Sheboygan after visiting and talking to
business owners. They said the
most outstanding features of the
area were the civic pride, transit
system, lakefront, art museum,
river area, newer Kohler neighborhoods, and the general warmth
and charm. They also noted that
the Childrens Museum, farmers market, golf courses, charter
fishing, Fork to Table restaurant,
and local river walk vendors were

amenities that would bring them

back to the community.
In a broad effort to counter the negative perception and
create a more positive first impression of Sheboygan County,
the (SCEDC) and the Sheboygan County Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) unveiled a new
workforce attraction website at
SomeplaceBetter.org. Visitors to
the website will have to dig deeper to discover where that Someplace Better actually is. The front
page of the website doesnt name
any location, but showcases Sheboygan County as still offering the
American dream with its beauty
and strong sense of community,
job listings culled from various
online sources, information on
housing, educational alternatives
for children, community and lifestyle information, and a printable
newcomers welcome guide.
We are trying to get past the
preconceived notions of rural and preconceived notions of
cold before individuals learn
what this area has, said Checolinski. The SCEDC also plans to
promote the Someplace Better
campaign at job fairs. Betsy Alles,
Executive Director for the SCCC
stated, Sheboygan County offers
a better life balance with short
commutes, globally-focused companies, world class recreation, innovative, award-winning schools
and friendly, safe communities.

Obituaries

Frances Magdalen Sass (1915-2015)

Frances Magdalen Sass, age
100, passed away peacefully
Thursday evening, October 8,
2015 at Pine Haven Christian
Home where she was a resident
for the past fifteen years.
She was born September 9,
1915 in Sheboygan to Anton and
Frances (Podbrager) Machtig.
On December 28, 1935 Frances
and Walter Sass were united in
marriage at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church. The couple
then made their home in Kohler.
Walter preceded her in death on
October 22, 1987.
Frances was a member of St.
John Evangelist Catholic Parish in
Kohler and the St. Ann Society.
She was an excellent homemaker,
a great cook, and gifted quilt maker. She always had a kind word for
everyone and put her family and
friends first. She will be missed
but her words of wisdom will live
on for her family. Dont worry, be
happy!
Frances is survived by two
sons, Robert P. (Frances) Sass
of Cedar Grove and Richard L.
(Deborah) Sass of Sheboygan;

one daughter, Mary E. (Richard

L.) Ashley of Fitchburg, WI; four
grandchildren, Lori (Doug) Smit
of Hull, IA, Robert (Mary) Sass of
Sheboygan, Jon (Kris) Sass of Cedar Grove, Michael Sass of Sheboygan; nine great-grandchildren,

Funeral services were held at
Ballhorn Funeral Chapels. Rev.
Robert Lotz, Pastor of St. John
Evangelist Catholic Church in
Kohler officiated. Entombment
was at Gardens of Peace Mausoleum in Kohler. A memorial fund
was been established in her name.
The family would like to extend a
heartfelt thank you to the excellent staff at Pine Haven Christian
Home for their kindness and loving care over the years.

Sharon A. Skeris (1948 - 2015)

Sharon A. Skeris, 67,
of Kohler passed away
on Thursday, December
17, 2015 at her home.
Sharon was born on
January 31, 1948 in Sheboygan to Raymond and
Mildred (Leibe) Clark.
Sharon was a 1966 graduate of Kohler High School. On
May 20, 1967 she married Charles
Thurber and they had one son. On
June 19, 2004 she married James
J. Skeris. Sharon retired from Aurora Healthcare as an administrative assistant.
Sharon was a member of the
NRA and enjoyed targeting shooting at the range. She also enjoyed
spending time outdoors, camping, and sailing. Sharon loved the
Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin
Badgers, and her beloved pets,
Mork, Mindy, and Missy.
Sharon is survived by her husband, James J. Skeris; one son,
Steve (fianc Debbie Brinker)
Thurber; her mom, Mildred Clark;

two step children, Michelle (Robert) Kleinschmidt and Michael

(Terry) Skeris; five step
grandchildren,
Jackson, Elena, and Mayella
Brinker, Zachary and
Katherine Kleinschmidt;
one brother-in-law, Pete
Skeris; two nephews, Christopher
Clark and Erie Clark; and dear
friends, Todd and Michelle Patterson. She is further survived by
other relatives and many friends.
Sharon was preceded in death
by her father, and her brother,
Ronald (Debbie) Clark.
A memorial service to celebrate
Sharons life was held on December 20 at the Wenig Funeral Home
in Sheboygan Falls with Rev.
Matthew Widder officiating.
Relatives and friends gathered
on December 20 at Wenig Funeral
Home.
A memorial fund has been established in Sharons name.

Grace UCC to hold Annual

Congregational meeting
On January 31 the people of
Grace UCC will hold their 92nd
Annual Congregational meeting
for the purposes of reviewing the
reports of the committees and
councils, as well as the pastor and
treasurer for the year of 2015 at

11:00. At this meeting any other

business may be brought up by
the members of the church. The
final vote of the meeting will be
to elect two members to serve on
the church council with three year
terms.

Charles Lorenz (1926 - 2015)

Charles Lorenz, 89, of
Sheboygan formerly of
Kohler, passed away on
Thursday, November 26,
2015, at Golden Living
Center in Sheboygan.
Charles was born on
February 27, 1926, in
Kohler, son of Charles
and Marie (Kampman)
Lorenz. He attended
Kohler High School.
Charles served in the US
Navy from 1944-1946.
He married Carol Reichert on July 9, 1949,
they had two daughters.
She preceded him on death on
August 15, 1997. On August 25,
2001, he married Gloria Petersohn
Van Engen in Kohler. Charles was
employed as a supervisor in the
shipping department with Kohler
Company for 40 years until his retirement in 1988.
Charles was a member of St.
John Evangelist Catholic Church
in Kohler where he was active in
the Holy Name Society. He was
a member of the Kohler Quarter
Century Club. Charles enjoyed
fishing, hunting, travel, yard
work, and playing cards.
Charles is survived by his wife
of 14 years, Gloria; two daughters,
Linda Lange of Kohler and Susan
(Rendell) Lilyquist of Sheboygan; two step-sons, Gary (Chris)
Van Engen of Sheboygan and
Glenn Van Engen of Sheboygan;
6 grandchildren, Jason (Heath-

er) Lilyquist, Matthew

Lange, Jonathan (Rita)
Lilyquist, Joshua (Nicole)
Lilyquist, Elizabeth (Andrew Liebhard) Lange,
and Lisa (Trever) Schneider; 2 step-grandchildren,

Charles was preceded in death
by his parents, an infant sister, Valeria Lorenz, his brother, Donald
Lorenz, and his great-grandson,
Owen.
A Memorial Mass to celebrate
Charles life was held on Saturday, December 5, 2015, at St.
John Evangelist Catholic Church
in Kohler with Rev. Bob Lotz
officiating. Burial took place at
Woodland Cemetery in Kohler.
The family would like to extend
their appreciation to the Sharon S.
Richardson Hospice and especially, the staff of the Golden Living
Center for the wonderful care they
gave to Charlie.
A memorial fund has been established in Charles name for St.
John Evangelist Catholic Church.

Short Course offered
The UW-Extension Landscape
and Grounds Maintenance Short
Course returns in February 2016.
This four week short course is
intended for: green industry and
landscape professionals, park
and grounds maintenance staffs
and for horticultural enthusiasts
interested in learning more. It will
provide up-to-date information on
current topics relating to plant
diseases, insect issues, perennials,
turf care, as well as urban tree and
shrub care.
This years short course will be
held at Sheboygan County UWExtension, 5 University Drive,

Bomber Basketball Club seeks more members

This season marks the fifth year
that the Bomber Basketball Club
has supported Kohler youth basketball in an effort to grow participation, engagement and ultimately success on and off the court
among our communitys young
athletes.
Since our meager beginning,
the Club has made a positive impact for boys and girls 3rd thru
8th grade teams in the following
ways:
* Contributed more than $20,000

toward league and tournament

fees to help offset costs to families
* Purchased more than 100 basketballs to help make practices
more efficient for coaches and
more effective for players
* Funded participation in coaching clinics for new and experienced coaches to grow their
knowledge of the game and how
to lead their teams
* Helped facilitate collaboration
among youth and Varsity coaches to align strategy and vision for
success at the next level
The Bomber Basketball Club

has also made life easier on parents, coaches, players and our
community by simplifying our
fundraising strategy. By hosting
boys and girls Saturday leagues
for the past three years, weve
eliminated the need for door-todoor sales by players, weve exposed Kohler Schools amazing
facilities to neighboring schools,
and weve facilitated interaction
among parents as they pitch in
to fill volunteer positions during
these events.
However, despite all the good
the Club has accomplished in

such a short period of time, we are

in desperate need of your help!
Although we receive (and appreciate) support from coaches
and the school, the Club is comprised of just four members at this
time. In order to continue to make
an impact on the Kohler basketball program for years to come,
we need to grow our organization.
Specific positions were looking
to create and fill immediately include a treasurer and a secretary,
but we welcome anyone interested in getting involved! If you or
someone you know has a passion

for youth basketball and is willing to share just a few hours a

month to help, please contact us

Kohler Credit Union helps in donation of 1,100 toys

KOHLER, Wis. Kohler Credit Union participated in Salvation
Armys annual Toys for Tots campaign that took place mid-November through mid-December. The
credit unions efforts garnered
approximately 1100 toys to be donated to local families in need this
holiday season in the Sheboygan
and Ozaukee County areas.
This years toy drive included
a visit by the U.S. Marines at all

eight of Kohler Credit Unions

branches as well as a matching
program where Kohler Credit
Union donated a toy for every toy
donated on the day the Marines
were on site.
This is the second year we had
the honor of having the U.S. Marines on site to help us with Toys
for Tots. Their presence generates
such a positive energy around
the campaign and helps bring in

donations. Our employees and

members look forward to having
them here and I look forward to
continuing this tradition, said
Laura Gabrielse, vice president of
communications at Kohler Credit
Union. We are very fortunate to
be part of such a generous community.
The mission of the Toys for
Tots Program is to collect new,
unwrapped toys each year, and

distribute those toys as Christmas

gifts to less fortunate children
in the community in which the
campaign is conducted. The toys
collected at Kohler Credit Union
were distributed to the Salvation
Army of Sheboygan County, the
Salvation Army in Plymouth and
the Volunteer Center of Ozaukee
who manages the Salvation Army
holiday campaigns in Ozaukee
County.

Kohler Credit Union is a $300
