Field Testing of Construction Products Seminar Program Introduction

Scope
Improper field testing of construction products by engineering firms results in numerous
project issues, including project shut downs, delays, and claims and complaints against the
manufacturers of these products. This one day training seminar, to be delivered in multiple
locations throughout North America, will be designed to enhance the skills of field technicians in
performing and evaluating the testing of construction products under various job site conditions.
Using industry accepted standards, learners will be exposed to proper practices through both
classroom and hands-on activities.
Audience
The intended audience for this program are Junior Engineers, Engineers in Training, and
other job site inspectors employed by Engineering Firms throughout North America. These
individuals are responsible for employing industry standards to test various product properties on
construction projects. These engineers typically have six months to five years in the industry and
have completed or are near completion of a four year University degree.
Goals
Goal 1 - Raise field testing skill level and understanding of using industry standards in field
testing coatings, sealants and concrete repair products.
Goal 2 - To increase the use of proper testing protocols by field technicians on project job sites.
Goal 3 - Decrease the incident rate of project issues resulting from improper field testing.

Objectives:
Objective 1 - When provided with a portable elcometer tester the learners within the Field
Testing Seminar should be able to accurately measure adhesion of a minimum of 6 material
samples and provide proper documentation according to ASTM D7234.
Objective 2 - When provided a concrete sample, participants in the Field Testing Seminar should
be able to perform a minimum of 2 calcium Chloride Tests and 4 Relative Humidity tests and
accurately document results according to ASTM F1869 and ASTM F2170 respectively.
Objective 3 - Given six samples of prepared concrete, the participants in the Field Testing
Seminar should be able to correctly identify the surface profile of a minimum four of the samples
using the ICRI 310.2R-2013 profile comparator.
Objective 4 Given a project scenario related to field testing, participants in the Field Testing
Seminar should be able to work in a group to develop a customer project proposal and deliver a
minimum five minute overview to the class.
