UPCOMING MEETING
Reading is Fundamental!
Well, my title is not very original, but it
is very true. And as educators we all
know how important reading is to the
educational process. Our theme for our
next meeting is simply READING.
Our service project associated with
this meeting will be supporting our
local Starkville Reads program. Lets
all bring gently used books and
magazines. Our own Jessica Hubbard
is a member of Starkville Reads and
will be sharing a few minutes about
this organization. The highlight of our
night will be our program by
Mississippi author and Starkville
native, Laurie Parker!
Again, a huge THANK YOU goes to
Lainie Anthony for allowing us into her
lovely home for our September
meeting. I hope you all enjoyed it as
much as I did. After all our ceremonies
we learned a lot about each other. I
believe we could form our own band
with the number of instrumentalists
and flag corp members we have. And
Donna Hopper

Sandy Maynard reported for the Membership Committee. New members, who were initiated at this meeting, had previously
attended an orientation meeting. Sandy also informed chapter members of the resignation of a current member, Emily Cain.
Reporting for the Communications Committee was Paula Mabry. She reported on the DKG book Our Heritage by Eunah Temple
Holden, which was published in 1960, with a second volume being published in 1970. These two volumes give a detailed history of
DKG. Paula stated that Holden is often referred to as the keeper of our heritage. Holden played a vital role in making DKG
international by being instrumental in the installation of the first international chapter in British Columbia. She was such a
strong believer in the abilities of women that she contributed $100,000 to DKG with a specific purpose: The fund was to be used
to help women develop and increase their leadership skills.
There was no new business.
Old Business:
Donna reminded everyone of the cards in the basket for recording STARS achievement items. She also reminded members that if
checks are used to make donations, the checks should be left in the basket, and the purpose of the donation should be written on
the memo line of the check.
Kathy Dawkins reminded members to pay their chapter dues if they had not already paid and to check with her to verify that
their information is correct before she sends the personal information in to nationals.
Our Woman of Distinction, Paula Mabry, who has spent forty-seven years teaching the arts, presented the program. She first
outlined benefits of participation in the arts, such as improvement in the following areas: academic performance, development of
motor skills, language development, decision making and critical thinking skills, visual-spatial skills, inventiveness, and cultural
awareness. She then outlined organizations that provide resources, grants, and workshops, such as Starkville Arts Council,
Mississippi Arts Commission, Mississippi Alliance for Arts Education (MAAE), and Starkville Community Theatre. She gave
requirements of different scholarships, examples of how scholarships can be used, and opportunities afforded by these
scholarships. Paula had prepared a folder for each chapter member that contained six handouts about arts in education.
After Paula concluded her presentation, Sally Laughlin spoke words of praise for Paula regarding both her educational and
personal attributes.
Donna gave members a few final reminders regarding paying dues, purchasing ribbons, and the 100% attendance drawing for
free dues for next year.
Donna also reminded members that the next meeting will be held Tuesday, October 27 th, at the presidents home on the campus of
MSU. Officers will arrive at 5:30 for set-up. Others may begin to arrive at 5:45, and the meeting will begin at 6:05. The guest
will be Laurie Parker, a Mississippi author. Laurie will bring books for children and adults that may be purchased. Donna
reminded members to bring their checkbooks.
Donna had provided Getting to Know Each Other cards to members earlier in the meeting. She asked members to put one fact
others might not know about them on the card and leave the cards in the basket. Then members were served refreshments.
As members returned to their seats and enjoyed their refreshments, they took turns reading the information on the card and
guessing the identity of the person who had written the card.
Next, each committee went to a different area to fill the Christmas shoe boxes. At the completion of this activity, the meeting was
adjourned.
