One significant learning experience in NFDN 2003 related to CLPNA
competency is the independent nursing action to give oxygen in a
emergency situation. One good example that we discussed during
NFDN 2003 class is about giving the oxygen in a emergency
situation, oxygen is considered a medication and a doctors order is
needed before administration, nurses as the first person to respond in
a life threatening situation we are authorized to give oxygen starting
from 2 litters per minute.

can loss the hypoxic drive of patients, the drive to breath. It is related
to CLPNA competency because knowledge about oxygen
supplementation and the ability to give it in emergent cases is very
important because administration of oxygen follows the simple
principle of airway, breathing and circulation. It is meaningful for me
because it gives me the initiative to be independent in my job,
competent but cautious in giving oxygen in a very emergent situation.

I would rate my understandings about the chosen CLPNA

competency as Good I understands the competency in theory and in
scenarios and nursing practice. To achieve this competency I have
attended all the theory class, do my reading in both Potter and Perry,
Brunner and Saddarths, I also ask questions to verify my knowledge,
during laboratory practice I read and do the skills with my partner in
administration of oxygen.
My knowledge about Respiratory care specifically oxygen therapy
can help me a lot as a student, following the principle of airway,
breathing and circulation I will be able to apply my skills in
laboratory and clinical settings, guided by what I read and what I
learned I will be more competent student practical nurse. In the future
nursing career, the knowledge and skills that I learned from my
college years will be my tool to be independent nurse, caring for
patients with airway and breathing disorder, I will apply what I
learned in long term or acute hospital setting.
