Origin

Neoclassicism is the name given to Western


movements in the decorative and architectural
aspect that draw inspiration from the "classical" art
and culture of Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome.

It was created during the neoclassical movement in the


mid-18th century.

It was part of a desire to bring back the original arts of


Rome and Greek.

Characteristics

Symmetrical Shape

Balance

Tall columns that rise as high as the building

Triangular pediment
(A pediment is a low-pitched triangular gable)

The roof was commonly domed but met in the


middle in a sort of triagular shape.

Fun Fact

The columns in these building appear to be the same size


from bottom to top.

However, the top is slightly tapered, meaning the column


gets narrower towards the top.

It acts as an optical illusion and helps support the


building better.

In some buildings its more noticeable but it usually isn't


noticeable
