Grendel

-Grendel was a monster who killed

warriors viciously and without avail
-a fiend out of hell
-descendant of Cain

Hero

-a key characteristic of a hero on

this time was someone who wasnt
afraid to die; very courageous
-honor and glory were most
important

Christianit
y

-religion, more specifically

Christianity, was beginning to rise
at the time of the story, 7 or 8 A.D.
-deep pagan background, then
reinterpreted to Christian beliefs

Herot

-a large hall used as the throne

room and the feasting hall
-Hrothgars throne and big
celebrations were said to be held
here
-the place where Grendels attacks
happened

Till the monster stirred, that demon, that

fiend, Grendel, who haunted the moors,
the wild marshes, and made his home in a
hell not hell but Earth. He was spawned in
the slime, conceived by a pair of those
monsters born of Cain, murderous
creatures banished by God, punished
forever for the crime of Abels death.
He leaped into the lake, would not wait
for anyones answer; the heaving water
covered him over.
But Beowulf longed only for fame.
Edgethos famous son stared at death,
unwilling to leave this world, to exchange
it for a dwelling in some distant placea
journey into darkness that all men must
make, as death ends their few brief hours
on Earth,
God must decide who will be given to
deaths cold grip.
The Almighty making the Earth, shaping
these beautiful plains marked off by the
oceans. Then proudly setting the sun and
moon to glow across the land and light it.
And then, in the morning, the mead-hall
glittering with new light would be
drenched with blood, the benches stained
red, the floors, all wet from the fiends
savage assault--
Hrothgars glorious throne, protected by
God

How did this piece of information enhance my
understanding of the poem?

It made it clear that Grendel was a direct

descendant of Cain. It established the
clear battle of good vs evil. Laid out the
foundation of where the story was to go.

This information was the introduction to

the cherished qualities of a hero. That is
one thing that is always consistent in the
story of a hero, the qualities and
characteristics. It did make it clear what
the expectation of a hero was in this
time period though.

When faced with this information I

began to understand how much
Christianity played a role in their time
period. They related just about
everything back to God.
This told me about the culture of the
people in this time and how some things
never really change. Herot is a loos
equivalent of a lunch room or party hall.
It helped me better picture the setting.

Christianit
y vs
Paganism

-Christians compared them to the

pagans as far as their dangerous
and poisonous nature
-paganism dies with Grendels
mother

That was their way, and the heathens

only hope, Hell always in their hearts,
knowing neither God nor His passing as
He walks through our world, the Lord of
heaven and Earth; their ears could not
hear His praise nor know His glory.

As I read the story I discovered that

there was really two battles going on:
good vs evil and Christianity vs
paganism. This made me see the story
two times. I saw the physical battle
between good vs evil and the
supernatural battle of Christians vs
heathens.
