The stench of death permeates Denmark's royal hall. "Grendel tears off into the night hemorrhaging blood," says the narrator. This scene really shows the graphic nature of Grendel and the mercilessness of his kills.

the lines Thoughts were as quick as his greed or his claws he slipped through the door and there in the silence Snatched up thirty men, smashed them Unknowing in their beds and ran out with their bodies the blood dripping behind him, back to his lair delighted with hi nights slaughter. So Hrothgars men lived happy in his hall till the monster stirred that demon, that fiend, Grendel who haunted the moors, the wild Marshes, and made his home in a hell not hell but earth. He was spawned in that slime, conceived by a pair of those monsters born And I, I already knew that all my purpose was this; to win the good will of your people or die in battle, pressed in Grendels fierce grip. Let me live in greatness and courage, or here in this hall welcome My death! And broke. The battle was over, Beowulf had been granted new glory: Grendel escaped but wounded as he was could flee to his den, his miserable hole at the bottom of the marsh, Only to die, to wait for the end of all his days. And after that

How did this piece of information enhance my understanding
of the poem? This scene really shows the graphic nature of Grendel and the mercilessness of his kills. Despite him hurting countless people and taking away lives, he continues to kill and hunt to feed his primal desire.
Tis passage showed me how the people feared
Grendel and how much he would terrorize them. It also spoke a little about where he came from which would explain his savage nature.
Beowulf wants to help out Hrothgar but no only
to stop a monster. This passage showed me how much they valued glory and respect above all else. Beowulf did not ask for money or food, all he wanted was the glory of defeating this creature. Vividly described the fight between Beowulf and Grendel. Grendel was seen as an unbeatable monster, until Beowulf arrived and defeated him. It shows Grendels death and the intensity of his passing. At last, a terrible evil was being purged from the world.

Protected
The Kings throne is protected
by God.
Icy
Grendel and Grendels mother
live at the bottom of an icy lake.
Tore
Beowulf tore Grendels arm
from his shoulder.
Killing as often as he could,
coming alone, bloodthirsty and horrible. Though he lived in Herot when the night hid him, he never dared to touch Hrothgars glorious throne, protected by God- God, whose love Grendel could not know And scratched in vain. Then she carried him, armor and sword all, to her home; he struggled to free his weapon, and failed. The fight brought other monsters swimming to see her catch, a host of sea beasts who beat at his mail shirt, stabbing with tusks and teeth they realized, suddenly, that shed brought him into someones battle-hall But his power had gone. He twisted in pain, and the bleeding sinews deep in his shoulder snapped, muscle and bone split and broke
This passage showed me how much they cared
about religion. Despite all of Grendels monstrous desires, he will not dare confront God. Grendel will kill anything but not the King because he is afraid of Gods wrath.
Showed me how evil Grendel and Grendels
mother were. I was able to imagine their home, what their life was like, and it gave a small insight into their history.
It shows how Grendel was defeated. He was seen
as an unstoppable creature because he could not be affected by weapons. Beowulf, using just his strength alone, was able to take off Grendels arm. This passage showed me the resilience and true strength Beowulf possessed in order to take down a fearsome creature.
