The Life Cycle of a Frog

Part One
Topic:

Teachers Name: Chris Davies, Ryan King, Dulce Vazquez, Julia Wright

Subject Area: Science/ Life Cycles

Class Information:
Grade Level: 2nd
Date: January 21, 2016

Class Demographics/Description:

1 IEP Student: We have one student who has ADHD, meaning he has difficulty keeping focused.
We plan to accommodate this student by seating him close to the front and providing him with a
fidget to keep his hands busy if it becomes necessary.
1 ELL student: Student moved to America from Korea 6 months ago. The student is starting to
recognize English, but still requires assistance. We will accommodate her by pairing her with a
buddy who speaks Korean and English
Overall, 20 students in class, ages from 7-8 years old, 11 girls and 9 boys.

Alignment:
In this quarter of second grade, we are learning about life cycles which aligns with the
Common Core Standard that discusses stages in the life cycle of a plant or animal. In this case
we will be focusing on the life cycle of a frog and we will going in depth of each stage and how
each stage is different.

Standards:

Common Core: 3 1.c Given pictures of stages in the life cycle of a plant or an animal, determine
the sequence of the stages in the life cycle.
ISTE-NETS-S: 2a. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools
and resources to promote student learning and creativity
InTASC: Standard #6: Assessment
The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage
learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the
teachers and learners decision making.

Part Two
Learning Objective:

Students will be able to identify the four stages in a frog's life cycle and sequence them
appropriately in order by constructing a poster within a group and presenting them to the class.

Teaching Materials:

- Computer
- Internet access
- SMART Board
- ActivInspire program
- YouTube
- Poster boards (one per group)
- Colored pencils and/or markers

- Research materials: magazines, Google, books, etc.

- Unifix cubes
- Fidget for student with ADHD
- Worksheet to accompany video

Anticipatory Set:

- Before beginning the lesson, the teachers will introduce our new class pet, a tadpole. Students
will get to watch the tadpole grow and develop into a frog in real time, giving them something
real and physical to connect to the lesson.

How will the instructor capture students attention?

-On top of introducing a class pet, videos will be shown that display the life cycle of a frog.
The teachers will access the students prior knowledge by quizzing them on vocabulary terms
that will be used.

the students moving.)

Part Three
Procedures:

Introduce and discuss the topic of a life cycle. Then we will provide examples of what certain
things go through life cycles. For example, a baby to an adult, caterpillars to butterflies, tadpole

to a frog. We will focus more in depth on the life cycle of a frog. We will start this topic off by
asking the students the following questions to access prior knowledge:
What is a frog?
Where do they live?
What are the stages of a frog's life cycle?
~~4 mins~~

2. Pass out worksheet that will go with the first Youtube video,Learn all about a Frog life
cycle, and we will give them the option to answer the questions during the video. So we will
watch the video. Then we will watch and listen to the Frog life Cycle Song, have students get up
and sway to the beat of the music as a fun brain break to get them up and moving.
~~4 mins~~~
After watching the videos,we will go over the answers to the worksheet as a whole class so each
individual student can have a study guide to look back.
~~2 mins~~

3.. Then we will divide the class into four groups of four by passing out unifix cubes of red,
blue, green and yellow colors. These colors will determine which group each person will be in.
Then once each person is in their group we will determine what job each person will have by
counting off one through four within each color assigned group. The job descriptions of each
number will be:
-One will be the Presenter, they will be the ones who present the material to the class and
the one who gets to ask the teacher questions that the group may have.
-Two will be the Researcher, so they will be the ones who will be in charge of finding the
information and informing the group of their findings.
-Three will be the Writers, they are in charge of writing down all the information found
by the researching and organizing it in a fun way on the poster paper.
-Four will be the Illustrator, they will be in charge of drawing/decorating the poster with
cool pictures with their topic.

We will send off each group to their assigned area and they will collaboratively work together to
create a fun poster representing their assigned stage of a frogs life cycle.
~~~12 mins~~~
4. Students will be instructed to do a turn and talk to the person next to them, and open up
the flipchart for today's lesson. They will be tasked with completing the fill in the blank exercise
using words from the word bank. We will then come together as a class, and as we focus on the
ActivInspire board, I will take suggestions for what students believe the correct answers are. We
will use this this opportunity for a short discussion on the frog's life cycle.
~~~6 mins~~~

5. As a closure we will wrap up our lecture by discussing two fun facts about frogs. Now
as a homework assignment for our class they will have to find at least two fun facts about frogs
that they will tomorrow present to the class as a whole.
~~~2 mins~~~
Part Four
Assessment Plans:
Formative Assessment:
-Students will work in groups to create posters to display a frogs life cycle in the correct order.
-Students will fill out a worksheet with proper vocabulary terms to accompany the video.
Summative Assessment:
-Students will complete a drag and drop fill in the blank activity using ActivInspire with a
partner to see what information they retained from the lesson.
Part Five
UDL Implementation:
Multiple Means of Representation:
Our lesson will utilize the Promethean Board during our introduction video. This piece of
technology will include visual and audio forms of presentation.
Our video will include subtitles that follow along with the video. This portion of our lesson will
cater towards our audio learners.
ActivInspire is a form of technology that will incorporate a flip chart which includes visuals and
interactive portions where students physically drag and drop words/pictures. This piece of
technology will benefit kinesthetic and visual learners.
The group lesson will incorporate teamwork as students are broken down into teams where they
will create a poster of the assigned life cycle stage of a frog. This portion of our lesson will
include visual, auditory, linguistic and kinesthetic forms of representation as students move about
the classroom.
Multiple Means of Engagement:
The beginning of our lesson will feature an intro video that front loads the topic for optimal
comprehension which will be our way of getting the ball rolling so to speak, and have the
students begin to think about the topic.
As a strategy to organize our lesson and cut down on transition time we have consequently
created a form of engagement. Students will get to pick a cube out of a jar to assign roles/jobs in
our group lesson.
Students will break into their designated groups and physically meet around the room in order to
construct their assigned stage in the life cycle. This portion of our lesson allows for the students
to become engaged in our lesson by way of working within a team. This is yet another way to
make sure students are engaged because the incentive to create quality work is held at a higher
standard, in other words, no one wants to be the weakest link or drag the team down.
The ActivInspire portion of our lesson where students are called on to drag and drop the pictures
of the stages with the corresponding descriptions will allow students to interact with todays
innovative technology.
Furthermore, the interactive life cycle game at end of class will be sure to capture the students
attention and encourage them to engage in a fun game!
Finally, fidgets for students who have difficulty keeping still during instruction will allow them
to get some of their wiggles out so they can better pay attention and engage in the lesson.
Multiple Means of Action and Expression:
During the group lesson each group will create a drawing for their assigned stage which allows
students to express their answer in a way that is outside the norm and in a creative manner.
Some students will be assigned the task of writing their description of the stage which will allow
students who are in favor of the conventional way of expressing their answers. In addition
students will have the job of verbally presenting their poster to the class. Finally, students will
move about the room to their specified group, a few students will be called on to physically drag
and drop pictures of the stages of the frog life cycle on the promethean board.
To give the students an element of choice our lesson will include an optional fill in the blank
worksheet which would benefit students who prefer this method of expression.promethean board
Part Six
Closure:
- To wrap up our lesson we will introduce a cool fun fact to the class and then ask the students
for homework to use research materials of their own, they may choose either books or go online,
to find their two fun facts about a frog and then the tomorrow they will share with the class
tomorrow.
Example of one fun fact: The larvae developing in the eggs can detect vibrations caused by
nearby predatory wasps or snakes, and will hatch early to avoid being eaten.
-For more at home practice students will be able to play this fun game where they will have to
sequence a frogs life cycle in the correct order from beginning to end. Below is the link that will
be given to the students:
