Class: 224-14
2014
Time: 1:15-2:30
School:
cole secondaire Des Sources
Duration: 75 minutes
By the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:
- Students will be able to differentiate accents from different
English speaking locations around the world. Students will
answer questions throughout the class while recycling prior
vocabulary words learned in this unit. Students will discuss
and work together in order to get the correct answer. I hope
to expose students to the importance and diversity of the
English language.
The breakdown of the assignment:
- We will begin the class with our dictation test, lines 1-5.
When students are done, we will then continue with our
unit. We will correct the homework as a class and have a
small discussion based on the homework questions.
Following the homework, students will be listening to a
short clip based on accents. Students will be able to hear
five different accents from countries around the world that
speak English and fill out a short handout. After the pair
and share, we will then be listening to short music clips
from different singers whose songs are in English however,
sung with different accents. Students will be working
individually as well as in a team to figure out where each
artist is from.

Dive into the unit
- Review what we spoke about last class.
- Guiding questions: What did we talk about last class? Prompt
students to lead them in the direction of travel
- When we travel, we speak to all kinds of people. Even in
Montreal, if you take a walk downtown, nearly every block you
will hear people speaking a different sounding English than
yours. Why do people's English sound so different? Prompt
students to discuss accents
(5 minutes)

Development:
Listening to accents: C2 activity
Students will be listening to a short clip of five different
individual accents. We will listen to it twice (three times in
necessary).
The first time: students will simply listen to the individuals
speak.
The second time: Students will be filling out the activity sheet.
The activity sheet shows five flags: Ireland, England, United
States, Canada and Australia. From the previous reading,
students will be able to locate which city the individual belongs
to by the hints dropped.
(5-10 minutes)
Share and compare
With the same partners as last class, share your answers, and
try to figure out which city each individual comes from.
(3-5 minutes)

Correct as a class:
Ask students for their answers & wait for them to think and
respond.
- (2-3 minutes)
Closure Activity:
Explain & Model (5-7 minutes)
- Students will be working as a team (groups of 4) to
figure out where the artist comes from. I have chosen
10 singers who come from the 5 countries we heard
before; Ireland, Australia, England, Canada and United
States.
- Students will hear 20-30 second clips from each song.
- They then have 30 seconds to write individually in their
yellow copybook (comprehension- Listening)
- After those 30 seconds have passed- they will be
discussing it as a team for 30-45 seconds (see how
much time they need from the first and gage it from
there).
- After all the teams have written down their final answer
on provided white boards, I will say lift and see who
guessed the right country.
- You have 5 replays= meaning that if the song is unclear
and more than 10 people raise their hand for the replay
then they get to hear the clip again.
- -With each song, the writer on the whiteboard will
change (rotate clockwise)
Play game!
- All students are to work together
-If students are getting out of hand we will stop playing
and do grammar work... it is their responsibility to follow
the rules.
(20-22 minutes)
End class: Pick up all the whiteboards
Plan B:
If time is an issue and activities finish earlier than expected,
go over dictation 6-10 vocabulary.
Assessment:
- C1 is always being assessed. Students will be practicing their
C2 for the test they have coming up (September 22nd).
Extra Notes
