A Chemical Reaction

occurs when 2 or more

molecules interact and
the molecules change

This is how things such as

explosions happen!

What is Happening?
One substance is changing to another substance
Substances that start a chemical reaction are called reactants.
Substances that are produced in the reaction are called products.

ReactantsProducts

What is Happening?
This happens because bonds break and form new ones!

Example of Chemical

Water
2 Atoms = Hydrogen (H)
and Oxygen (O)
Bonds holding the Oxygen
and Hydrogens break and
connect together

new bonds form WATER!!!

Physical vs. Chemical

You can reverse a physical change, not a chemical change
Changes
Ex: Baking a cake is chemical, since you cannot reverse it so that all the ingredients
are separate again

Physical vs. Chemical

A physical change is like freezing water. You can melt the ice again to
Changes
turn it back to water!

Atoms make up EVERYTHING
They make up molecules, which are the building blocks of everything

What do atoms look like?

It took scientists hundreds, if not thousands of years to agree on the
model used today

What do you think an atom looks like? What do you think is in an

atom?

What do atoms look like?

A lot of you might have seen this picture and think it looks like this:

A lot of you might have seen this picture and think it looks like this:

This is not true- atoms look more like this:

This model was discovered by

Erwin Rudolf Josef Alexander Schrdinger

The Rundown:
The building blocks of atoms are protons, neutrons, and electrons.
The Protons and Neutrons are stuck together in which is called the
Nucleus, or the center part of the atom.
Electrons flow in the electron cloud (drawn on the rings of an
atom)

Atoms and Charges:

Atoms have a charge of 0, which means they are Neutral like the
number zero. It can not be positive nor negative.

Atoms and Charges:

Atoms have a charge of 0, which means they are Neutral like the
number zero. It can not be positive nor negative.
However, different parts of an atom have different charges:
Electrons: Negative charge (-)
Protons: Positive charge (+)
Neutrons: Neutral charge; not (+) or (-)

Molecules:
Atoms join together and form molecules

Molecules:
Atoms join together and form molecules

Atoms held together by chemical bonds

How do these bonds happen?

msAto share and exchange electrons

Example:

Made of: 2 Hydrogen Atoms and 1 Oxygen Atom

Discussion Questions:
What does an atom look like?
What are its different parts?
What is a molecule? How do they form?
What questions do you still have?
Summarize what you have learned.

STATES OF MATTER!!!

What is matter?
Matter is anything and everything around you

What is matter?
Matter is anything and everything around you
There are 3 states of matter: Solid, Liquid, and Gas

Solids:
All the molecules are packed together tightly: they are vibration and
cannot move
Ex:

Liquids:
The molecules in liquids can move around and slide past each other
Ex:

Gases
Move freely, have a lot of space in between molecules
It is harder to see gases
Ex:

Change of state
When enough heat is added, solids can turn to liquids and liquids can
turn to gases

Change of state
When enough heat is added, solids can turn to liquids and liquids can
turn to gases
Solid Liquid = Melting
Liquid Solid = Freezing
Solid Gas = Sublimation (Ex: Dry Ice)>

Liquid Gas = Vaporization, Evaporation

Gas Liquid = Condensation
