A historic noreaster brought gale force winds and


at least a foot of snow to much of the Jersey Shore Saturday, leaving thousands without power and leading
to at least minor flooding along the oceanfront and
back bays.
You can certainly rank this as one of the most significant noreasters of the past decade, or even longer, said New Jersey state climatologist David A. Robinson.
He said the storm has packed a powerful punch,
with wind gusts of more than 60 mph on Long Beach
Island, snow totals likely to soar over two feet in Morris County, and severe coastal flooding in Cape May
and Atlantic counties.
Gov. Chris Christie, who returned from campaigning in New Hampshire to be on hand for the blizzard,
said at a news conference that the Jersey Shore made
it through the first high tide at 6:45 a.m. and most of
the coast is in very good shape.
The National Weather Service in Mount Holly reported 16 inches of snow in the Whiting section of
Manchester, 15 inches in Jackson, 15 in Toms River,
and 14 in Howell and Colts Neck. Those totals, many
