vss. 1,3,5,7

CALL TO WORSHIP
We are the body of Christ and we belong with each other.
Some seeing
Some hearing
Some reaching out and touching in the name of God.
We are the body of Christ and we belong with each other.
Some teaching
Some healing
Some breaking new ground in new places.
We are the body of Christ
Many and varied
Wonderfully diverse.
And we come to worship together!
Many Gifts, One Spirit

YOUNG PEOPLES MESSAGE
HYMN

Christ, from Whom All Blessings Flow

UMH 550

Messenger
Mary Oliver
My work is loving the world.
Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird
equal seekers of sweetness.
Here the quickening yeast; there the blue plums.
Here the clam deep in the speckled sand.

OPENING TO GOD

Are my boots old? Is my coat torn?

Am I no longer young, and still not half-perfect? Let me
keep my mind on what matters,
which is my work,
which is mostly standing still and learning to be
astonished.
The phoebe, the delpinium.
The sheep in the pasture, and the pasture.
Which is mostly rejoicing, since all the ingredients are here,
which is gratitude, to be given a mind and a heart
and these body-clothes,
a mouth with which to give shouts of joy
to the moth and the wren, to the sleepy dug-up clam,
telling them all, over and over, how it is
that we live forever.

EPISTLE LESSON
I Corinthians 12:12-31a
For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the
members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with
Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body
Jews or Greeks, slaves or freeand we were all made to drink of one
Spirit. Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of
many . . . If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one
member is honored, all rejoice together with it.
Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And
God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets,
third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of
assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. Are all
apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?
Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all
interpret? But strive for the greater gifts. And I will show you a still
more excellent way.
GOSPEL LESSON
Luke 4:14-21
Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee,
and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country.
He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.
When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he
went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He
stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to
him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was
written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has
anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to
proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to
let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lords favor.
And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat
down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he
began to say to them, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in
your hearing.
RESPONSE
Becky Walker
Because he came to bring good news to the poor;
Let us be bearers of the Good News.
Because he came to proclaim release to the captives;
Let us break the chains of injustice.
Because he came to give vision to those who could not see;
Let us see the world through the lens of compassion.
Because he came to let the oppressed go free;

Let us overcome systems of inequality.

Because he came to proclaim the year of the Lords favor;
Let us sing the praises of Christ our Lord!

Announcements
Monday Companions start a new book tomorrow at Eves home on
Browns River Rd, 7 pm. Voices in the Night by Pulitzer winner Steven
Millhauser, is a collection of short stories, the seeds of which are culled
from many sources: the Biblical Samuel, who hears the voice of God
calling him in the night; a young, pre-enlightenment Buddha, who
searches for his purpose in life; Rapunzel and her Prince, who struggle
to fit the real world to their dream.
From the New York Time Review of Book: Spellbinding, masterly,
sublime . . . Voices in the Night abounds with marvels. The stories are
anchored by dark human yearningsfor perfection, or excitement, or
some ungraspable form of fulfillment.
This is a great time to jump in to Companions. Because the
short stories are independent, you can miss a Monday and not fall
behind! Come join us for cheese, wine, and great discussion!

Thursday Companions will be starting a new book on Thursday, Feb.
