Line 515 : blessed with their magic,
the best of all weapons
Beowulf is blessed with a magic sword, in which he will
defeat Grendels mother.
Line 540-542 : repaid him for the visit...armless
Beowulf is not rewarded here with materialistic items, but
instead is granted with the pride of seeing the corpse of
Grendel. Beowulf is pleased, and therefore rewarded, with
personal glory.

Kennings In Beowulf : Connections

Line 598 : Geats brave prince

There are several kennings spread throughout the section,
but this one resonates closest alongside the theme. Through
Beowulfs hard work and bravery, he deserves the kenning
Geats brave prince. Our theme states those who are
heroic are rewarded and Beowulf is rewarded simply with the
persona of someone who is brave, of noble birth, and the
protector of a people. Hence, Geats brave prince.

Christian Influence

Own candle, lit the sky. (Lines 527-528)
This quote is regarding the light that took over the room
after Grendels mother dies. They compare this light to
Heavens bright light that fills the sky. Christians
think of Heaven as peaceful and bright along with the
Geats in this poem.
As only He can, He who rules Time and seasons, He who is
truly God. (Lines 566-568)
Christians believe that God can do great things that no
one else can and this quote suggests that they agree with
that.

all. Her body fell To the floor, lifeless, the sword was wet
With her blood, and Beowulf rejoiced at the sight.
The Geets Carried Beowulfs helmet, and his mail shirt.
Then the Geets brave prince entered, covered with glory
for all the battles he had fought.

Our theme statement was Those who are heroic are rewarded.
Those three quotes show Beowulf defeating Grendels mother
and returning home to celebration for his good deeds. They
represent our theme statement very well.

In lines 513-605, we are shown that heroic Beowulf

beheaded grendel's mother in order to keep his brave status
and legacy. He will later be rewarded king.

Evidence

Battles he had fought; he sought Hrothgar to salute him and

show Grendel's head. He carried that terrible trophy by the
hair... (lines 600-605)
This shows that Beowulf takes a lot of pride in his
battles. When he wins, he wants people to know how
glorious he is and for his legacy to continue on.

Heros will be heros
Although Beowulf hasn't
gotten killed this far into the
story, he knows that he is aging
and he wont be young Beowulf
forever. He has to build up a
noble status to insure that he
will be remembered when he is
gone. So, even when Beowulf is
gone, he will be remembered as
the hero he was.
