Context:
ThestudentshavebeenreadingthroughtheSUPERKIDSHitSecondGradebook
asaclass.Thechaptertheywillbereadingisthenextinthesequence.PredictionisaSOL
thatthestudentsshouldreachin2ndgrade.Wehaveinformallyusedpredictioningroupread
aloudsalready,andthestudentshaveshownthattheyknowtheideaofpredicting,butIam
unsureofhowdeeptheirpredictionskillsgo.

Assessment:
Studentswillfirstanalyzealistofwordsfromthechapter,thenwritedownapossiblestorytitle
anddescribeapossiblestorylineforthechapter.Iwillthenhavethestudentsopentheirbooks
andlookatthetitleofthechapter,andprovidetheopportunityforstudentstowritearevised
storylineprediction.Wewillthenreadthroughthechapterasaclass.Oncethereadingisover,
Iwillaskthestudentstorecordiftheirpredictionswerecorrect.Theywillalsowritedowna
sentencefromthetextprovingordisprovingtheirpredictiontoshowevidence.

Worksheetforstudentstorecordtheirpredictions,andhalfsheetsfortherevised
predictions(Iwillmake)

Procedure:
1. Haveworksheetsalreadyprintedoutandslidereadytobeprojected.(Havewords
printedontheworksheetaswelljustincaseoftechnologicaldifficulties.)
2. Explaintostudentsthatwearegoingtousewordsfromthechaptertocreatepredictions
forthechapter.Asktheclasstogenerateadefinitionforprediction
3. Asktheclassifpredictionsarealwayscorrect.Besuretolettheclassknowthatitis
alrightforpredictionstobewrong,andthattheycanchangetheirpredictionsasthey
readmore!
4. PassouttheworksheetsandputthewordsontheSMARTboard.Explainthattheseare
wordsfromthechapterwearegoingtoread,andhavetheclassreadthewordsaloud
together.
5. Firstdirectthestudentstowritedownapossibletitleforthechapterbasedonthewords
theysee.Then,havestudentswritedownwhattheythinkisgoingtohappeninthis
chapterandwhy.Iwillexplainthatintheirwhytheyshouldlookatthelistofwordsand
tellmewhichwordsledthemtotheirprediction.
6. Collectthepredictionsonceallofthestudentsareready.ThenpassouttheSUPER
KIDSbookandhavethestudentsfindthenameofthechapterinthetableofcontents.

informationiftheywouldliketotheirstoryline.Givetheoptionthattheycanwritedown
thesamepredictionasbeforeifthetitledoesnoteffecttheiroriginalpredictions.

8. Turntothechapterandreaditasaclass(thestudentsarecomfortablewithapopcorn
readingstyle).
9. Oncethereadingisoverpassbacktheworksheetsandhavethestudentswritedownif
theirpredictionswereprovenornot.Havethestudentswriteonthebackoftheoriginal
worksheetiftheirpredictionswererightornot,andhavethemwriteonesentencefrom
thechapterthatprovedordisprovedtheirprediction.

Differentiation:

student.Thiswillhelpthestrugglingreaderswithprocessingthecontentofthelesson.There
arefourstudentswhowillneedmoreindividualattentiononvoicingtheirpredictionsonpaper.I
willprovideassistanceinhavingthemvoicetometheirpredictions,andhelpthemtoputwhat
theysaidonpaper.IhavetwostudentswhoIanticipatewillfinishveryquickly,andIwill
challengethemtowriteasecondprediction,adifferentstorylinethatcouldoccurwiththesame
listofwords.Icollecttheworksheetsinbetweentohelpavoidstudentsfrommarkingouttheir

originalthoughtsandchangingtheirpredictionstomatchthebook.Thiswillhelpmystudents
withlesswillpowertokeeptheirpredictionsgenuine.

Whatcouldgowrong:
Theprojectorcouldnotwork,inthatcaseIhavethewordswrittenontheworksheets,
andwillhandwritethemonthewhiteboard.
Iforgettheworksheets/thecopierdoesntwork,inwhichcaseIwillhavethestudents
writeouttheirpredictionsonblanksheetsofpaperwithmyguidance
