Students have had two lessons reading The Giants Ice Cream by Jill Eggleton, illustrated by Kelvin Hawley.
In previous lessons, students have predicted the ending of the story and identified rhyming words. Students
have been developing skills in story retell, as well as gaining phonological awareness, through recognizing
sounds (phonemes) and syllables in spoken words.

CONTENT

Share feelings and thoughts about the events and characters in texts (ACELT1783).

DESCRIPTION

Identify some features of texts including events and characters and retell events from a text

Create and illustrate an alternative ending to the text.

LESSON OUTLINE
INTRODUCE (10 minutes)

Introduce the big book The Giants Ice Cream by Jill Eggleton, illustrated by Kelvin Hawley. Guide students through
main events and sequence of events, to develop summarizing skills.

EXPLORE (15 minutes)

Reread the text, asking students to identify any sight words they recognise eg) the, said, he, for, so, and, me. If a
student identifies a sight word, ask them to sound it out.

Students to think-pair-share an idea for an alternate ending to the text, to develop inference skills.

Students to draw a picture that illustrates their ending, using lots of detail and colour.

Hand out the English books and task cards to the students. Students to glue the task cards into their books and
complete the picture beneath.

Teacher to assist in writing the ending to stories where necessary,

REFLECT/SUMMARISE (5 minutes)

Students to put their English books and pencils away, and sit together on the floor in preparation for following lesson.
