Weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott said 14 millimetres of rain was recorded in

Tuggeranong between 7.30pm and 8pm, with similar reports across Canberra's
northern suburbs.
On Monday evening, the Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm
warning for the Canberra region warning of damaging winds, large hailstones and
flash flooding.
In Tuggeranong, many residents reported power outages and posted pictures and
videos of large hail stones falling in their backyards.

The State Emergency Service has urged people to move their cars away from trees,
remove loose items around their homes and to keep clear of creeks and storm
drains.
"If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and
ring 000 if you need rescue," a spokesman said.

Ms Westcott said storms were moving across eastern NSW on Monday afternoon,
including to the south and west of the ACT
"Heavy rain, damaging winds and hailstones are all possible in Canberra so people
should take action and precautionary steps to ensure their cars and belongings are
safe," she said.
While expected, the hail and heavy rains caused havoc for those attending the
Australia Day celebrations at Parliament House, with Jimmy Barnes taking the stage
in gloomy conditions.
Ms Westcott said more rain and thunderstorms were likely in coming days although
the forecast was volatile and could change.
"The ACT is a small target but the good thing is the weather will be a little cooler
and we won't see any of those stinking hot mid-30 days like earlier in the month,"
she said.
"This low pressure system will hang around the area for the next few days and there
is a possibility of another low pressure system coming up from Victoria.
"I would definitely be hanging onto my umbrella tonight and making sure I have it
for the rest of the week too."
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the Canberra region is likely to see light
showers until Saturday with possible thunderstorms on Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday.
Temperatures are set to remain in the mid-20s throughout the week with up to 8
millimetres of rain forecast on Wednesday and Friday.
